I live in Tanzania and here any kid that is above the age of 2 has free rein to go wherever they want. Maybe it's not a better way (though I suspect it is), but it is certainly easier (assuming you don't have 8 children like most

Would you pick up a $20 bill on the ground? I think we all know the answer to that question, and if you know the answer to that question, you know the answer to your question: To make fucking money (of course).

I don't think you understand what many HFT firms do. They arbitrage between exchanges. For example the option or futures price of a security in Chicago and price of the underlying in New York. Also arbitraging between equities listed o

You can’t really do any data analysis without pandas in python though. In fact python is a terrible language and the only reason anyone should use it is for access to sklearn, scikit, pytorth, and pandas. Hopefully Julia will be able to uns

I’ve always thought the vigenere cipher was incredibly elegant and beautiful. Also, the Enigma cipher is effectively just a vigenere cipher with a super long key.

If you want your business to succeed, you need to have multiple edges against the competition. Simply using what other people are using isn't going to give you a technological edge. Look at Paul Graham with Viaweb. He used lisp because

Will this mean that Akka can support true multitasking like Erlang? If so, that sounds amazing. Being able to write blocking code in actors is such a big win.

Kids can roam much more freely in a city that the suburbs. You need a car to get around in the suburbs and so kids need their parents to drive them everywhere. Cities are much better for kids because they can take the train or bus and gain

That's not what it implies. The article is just talking about the price of housing in Seattle. The journalist was comparing the cost of the home the family bought, with a theoretical similar house in the city. Moreover, almost everyone

Suburbs are way worse for children than cities are. As a teen/pre-teen in a city you have independence, you can go to places with your friends and hangout. Suburbs make your children dependent on you for rides and consequently stunts t

Bloomberg is a great company, but I do agree that there’s something wrong with their investigative journalism. For a firm that has such high reputation and trust in the industry, they are really sloppy in a few areas.

Yes of course, the mean is the first moment and a Bessel correction would be inappropriate. Now I feel stupid. The mean calculated by sum(p_t x_i) or 1/n sum(x_i) is already the best linear unbiased estimate. Maybe we can't get be

Seeing that it's a uniform distribution, let's start out with assuming our sample mean (the average serial number we find) has the same distribution as the true mean (the actual number of tanks in existence). If this is true, then

I’ve always thought it unfortunate that fexprs were dropped for macros in lisp. For a language that touts homoiconicity and first class functions/objects, it feels strange that macros aren’t first class. My understanding is that fexprs

Do many people use TeXmacs? Now that you can export markdown and org-mode to LaTeX, TeXmacs doesn’t seem to provide much value. I use org-mode with embedded LaTeX for many documents and it works really well for standard stuff. You still are

Honest question: why doesn’t everyone just use hash functions for passwords. Generating a Base64 string from a secret salt + the website name sounds ideal. This is what I do, and it works very well.
