This is precisely why the desktop OS market represents a huge opportunity right now. If not an opportunity for startups then for significant innovation by the existing players. Our usage has changed so much that the standard patterns implem

I have worked on major console games and written games in both C and C++. I also maintain an open source raytracer which I've implemented in C, C++, D, and python. So yes, I speak from experience. Eve online is a great example of a game for

C++ violates the Zen of Python's axiom that "explicit is better than implicit" all over the place. C does not; it is very explicit. I would write as much as possible in Python and use C for the performance critical stuff (which, for a game,

Interesting that Bill Gates said, "Microsoft is rewriting all its' application offerings to use an advanced HTML interface and no longer the current windows based system," in 1998. Why are we still not there, 11 years later? Coincidentally,

If I'm reading the docs correctly, you'd have to make a server-side HTTP request from your synchronous app to nginx for each message you want to push to each client . I'm pretty sure that will be prohibitively slow. It would be much nicer

I will be happy to see the clutter of all the "Lite" apps disappear from the App Store. With the race-to-the-bottom economy of the App Store, though, I have to wonder if Free will be the new $.99 and every app will have a screen that says,

When Mercedes releases a new E-Class, Honda doesn't start shaking in its boots about declines in Civic sales. Gruber is right; the markets for Windows and Mac OS are becoming more and more orthogonal.

I must say that this article kind of turns me off to iPhone development. They made a huge marketing push for that app. Somehow they got press coverage all over the web. They ran a laptop giveaway for people who retweeted the launch. Their

Exactly. Hence the "pre" in prefork. A "forking" web server (one fork per request) would be incredibly inefficient, whereas prefork is only... slightly inefficient. :-)

Oh, you were referring to the syscalls/portability tradeoff. In that case it's still not really a counter example, because Apache made the same decision in its early versions (Unix only). And that's a reasonable decision to make given the t

That's not really a counter example. nginx does indeed fork off child processes, but it uses async I/O in each child process. It doesn't use the traditional pre-fork process-per-connection model that Apache's pre-fork MPM uses or that Unico

There's a good reason most Ruby and Python projects don't rely heavily on system calls: portability. If you care at all about portability, it's just easier to not hit the system calls directly, otherwise you'll have to detect host OS and ma
