It's all about maintaining momentum. Sure, a guy can work till 5:00 AM but the next day is usually shot. If you stopped at 9:00 PM though, and bottled up that momentum (your progress) till morning - you'll have a brain full of fresh energ

One word: simplify. Once you've got that in mind I recommend using Fireworks for mockup. It has easy to use vector tools for creating layouts, trying different colors, manipulating fonts, etc.
