BBEdit dates back to 1992, and I believe Tex-Edit is even older. CodeWarrior and BBEdit were both Carbonized for OS X very early (because developers needed them for bringing up other apps). I don't remember SubEthaEdit coming out until

Related tweet from last week: https://twitter.com/krzyzanowskim/status/1062740353533513728 Observation: Before 2014, iOS conferences were iOS conferences and was mostly about how to use the frameworks. After 2014,

Visual Studio still isn’t even 64-bit native on Intel. I wouldn’t be surprised if that got fixed in the next year or two, but I think ARM native is farther off (depending on how well ARM machines do in the marketplace)

The feature is part of the airplane’s certification (probably added to make the handling characteristics more similar to previous 737 generations), it won’t be disabled. An FAA AD might be coming to fully document it in the FCOM, and pilots

It's NVMe to the T2 SoC, which acts as the storage controller (among many other tasks). It would be nice to have the raw NAND on a removable card, but the market for "raw-NAND-on-a-stick" would be entirely limited to these ma

They are a lot more similar than they were when the MacBook came out a few years ago. However, the MacBook is fanless (which also means much slower) and smaller/thinner/lighter than the Air. Will the MacBook stay around? I suspect

My personal guess is that they wanted to release the printed spec before they released the code. The spec has now been released, the 10.14 source has not, maybe apfs.kext will be in the 10.14 source drop. (also, HFS+ and its fsck have alway

With 2 gigabit Ethernet ports, this would make a great pfSense/OpenBSD router. Too bad the price will be over $100 though, not including a DDR4 SODIMM, but that’s the price of Intel. Great to see a well-known boardmaker coming out with

Also, I think FreeBSD eliminated the giant lock ~10 years ago and maintains similarly good documentation. It’s just a matter of priorities, and SMP scalability/high performance has never been on the top of the OpenBSD list.

One of the few remaining services in macOS Server (discussed elsewhere on HN today) is Profile Manager, an Apple-developed MDM server. Given that it requires a static public IP and only runs on macOS, there's a pretty small niche that

Exactly. One of the biggest reasons why Carbon (and Mac OS X) succeeded is that Carbon apps also ran on OS 8/9. Big apps like Acrobat, Final Cut Pro, Mozilla, and many others were able to use Carbon and run on OS 9 and X.

On that note, I am surprised that they added Fusion-awareness to APFS, rather than just putting APFS on top of CoreStorage. It certainly is better to have the filesystem aware of the Fusion situation, but...measurably, significantly better?

The 'Fusion' section at the end is interesting. macOS 10.13 didn't convert Fusion drives to APFS, but 10.14 will. Presumably this specific support for Fusion drives is new in 10.14. HFS+ had no knowledge about Fusion drives,

Probably Retrospect for the backup software, it was the standard on Mac OS. I feel like 8mm was probably the most common consumer (i.e. cheap) tape format, but also could’ve been 4mm.

These were designed by Centaur Technology (based in Austin, TX), I'd love to hear from any alums (danluu?) what the purpose of the coprocessor is. BTW there's an interesting documentary about Centaur, free to watch on Prime Video.
