The short answer is yes, you need to use the environment to fully grok Smalltalk. Much of the power of Smalltalk comes from the environment. It is pretty amazing how even now parts of Smalltalk are more sophisticated than todays programming

Yep. That is exactly how you solve this problem. I've done this with Lucene and then searched either the regular field or the reversed field depending on the wildcard query.

I would also recommend incorporating in your home state. I incorporated in Minnesota and it was ridiculously easy, simplest government form I've ever seen. However if you're going to be seeking VC then it probably makes sense to incorporate

Yea, but that's not what most mean by "write once run anywhere." I don't consider having to write separate view controllers for iPhone and iPad "write once run anywhere." In fact that's not much different than many existing cross platform a

Now what I'd really like is the reverse: Webkit in an emacs buffer. That would totally rock I'd never have to leave emacs. I wonder how hard it would be to hack something up like that?

This is a fantastic book, I'm using it to build my own IR system and it has been immensely useful. I also own Managing Gigabytes but I find this book to be much more useful and up to date.

I find his use of Ragel generated state machines fascinating. He uses them in ways I wouldn't typically consider, very clever stuff. I'm on the lookout for nasty code of my own that can be replaced with a state machine.

I'll also highly recommend FastSpring, their customer service has been phenomenal and the store features have saved me loads of time. You'd be crazy to try and build a store like it yourself. Instead, go with FastSpring and spend the time y

I also recommend UIUC. They have an excellent, rigorous program with an incredible student ACM chapter. The ACM chapter does lots of great technical projects that really help polish up your skillset (plus the projects are loads of fun) UIUC
