I'd go as far as to add a "Why should we give this to you?" question, because honestly, why should IBM get a patent over this?

> Wolfram's proposal sounds completely backward to me. You'd have to consider: does google.data apply to google.org or google.com? Should we have google.org.data and google.com.data? As for that notion, maybe we should switch to naming

Yeah, China hasn't really been 'communist' since the days of Mao. To expand on what you said, here's an article from 12 years ago (that's getting incredibly weird to say) about China opening up to private enterprise: http://news.bbc.co.uk/

Kind of disappointed, really. I wonder if the font rendering really is better in FF? I hardly open it anymore other than to browse sites that I feel to be shady (as I have FF much more hardened than Chrome).

A bit humorous almost that some of our most cutting edge scientific research is still done in Fortran in some fields despite being over 50 years old :P

I do not think now is the time to cut GoDaddy a break at all. If anything, this sort of action should be taken on other companies who choose to have such adamant support of SOPA. I transferred my domain names from GoDaddy to Namecheap a whi

Wow, I wasn't aware of this. I'm still a student but it seems that about 1 out of every 2 journal articles is by an Elsevier owned journal. I'll have to keep note of that for the future.

Some of these companies are just so random... Why, for instance, does Adidas, L'Oreal, American Apparel, Rite Aid, Pfizer, etc. even have a stance on SOPA? I was rather disconcerted to see that Elsevier was on this list :(

Exactly. I've had the idea of using Google to find information ingrained in me since elementary school when they taught us how to efficiently search with it. I use Chrome, google apps for business, google talk, android os, and plenty of oth

The Netherlands, Sweden, etc. provide pretty good coverage and is where a lot of the seedboxes for torrenting are held. If you have something you want the government to have a almost nonexistent (depending on what it is) chance of getting t

No. Not that easy. They use VPNs offshore chained together not to mention the off shore vps' they have. Of course they would use protection when even just getting on Twitter, so a phone call from the government would do very little as the g

I wouldn't pay for Twitter. Period. I don't find it useful at all, nor do I find any meaningful content on it. Maybe I'm still just not getting Twitter, but for the most part, or I'm not following the right people on Twitter, but it's defin

I think it comes down to what you have planned for the future. I can think of several people who bit the "liberal arts" bullet, to get a well rounded education, worked in a random industry, then ended up going back to a graduate school/law

And you're basing your claims of no evidence on...? I study evolution and genetic variability in populations of a certain algae, and have data from the last 20 years from across the country (not the person who took it 20 years ago though)

Where are the tech people going then if they're leaving Facebook? I don't see many "competitors" that would be an alternative. For the general population, I definitely don't see Facebook going away. Things such as invitations to social gath

I pull up HN every few hours on the weekends, check the front page, ask, and new. Usually during the week it gets checked when I have a bit of down time between things I'm doing (Android of course makes this easy). I also idle on IRC, poppi

Didn't read the article yet, but I think the world would be full of people who actually understood computers (or enough about Linux to function with it) and a much much geekier life. That would be awesome. reads article .

First impressions on the overall speed of the site are not that great. It's running very slow, certain features aren't working, etc. For instance -> Uploading a background just isn't working for me.
