A bit humorous almost that some of our most cutting edge scientific research is still done in Fortran in some fields despite being over 50 years old :P

- cleverjake 15y agoA friend of mine at school was doing research in particle physics and I asked him why he was doing his stuff in fortran, and he said that all the physicists learned how to program in college (read 40-50 years ago), and were too busy to learn anything new to teach.
- LeafStorm 15y agoYeah, here at NC State just about all the engineers besides the CSCs and ECEs have to learn FORTRAN as well. Granted, it's FORTRAN 95 as opposed to the 50-year-old variant, but looking at my roommate's homework assignments, the language definitely shows its age.
- memset 15y agoSure, but your nuke friends doing internships at Progress Energy are liable to see some variant of FORTRAN in their work!
- MaxGabriel 15y agoAs per a United pilot, the mainframe United Airlines uses for flight scheduling is programmed in Fortran. They don't have a GUI for checking flights, just text commands.
