I don't think we'll ever do better than 'IO is made out of bytes'.

LLMs reinforce what the majority is already doing, because that's what it's trained on. I'd like ORMs to go away but LLMs aren't going to do that.

Language adoption maybe , but not language development . Language dev requires precise semantics. If a user decides that types or other academic nonsense are overrated, they can get away with it. You can be cavalier and just let your ap

Why didn't they get their usual 9-5ers to do the job? Why bother getting the guy who'd published the computing paper in academia in 1936 to come work at Bletchley in 1937?

This may not go over as well as you'd think. I took Haskell in the same uni course with FSAs, Turing machines, Lambda calculus, natural deduction, Hoare logic and structural induction. So I was exposed to the "base case & step

As they say, we shouldn't judge AI by the current state-of-the-art, but by how far and fast it's progressing. I can't wait to see future models get it even more wrong than that.

When I pitched Kafka to my backend team in 2018, I got pushback from the ops team who wanted me to use something AWS-native instead, i.e. Kinesis. A big part of why I doubled-down on Kafka is because it's vendor neutral and I can just

It's not just about the scaling, it's about solving the "doing two things" problem. If you take action a, then action b, your system will throw 500s fairly regularly between those two steps, leaving your user in an incon

I once worked in a small VB6-based team - you can probably guess the attitudes and surrounding tech were just as out of date. I tried to push for using svn, rather than just making copies of our source code folders and adding dates to them.

A lot of people want to "inline" IO from a non-IO function too. I'm glad that the fight happens between the developer and the compiler so that it doesn't have to happen between developers on every single pull request.

Nothing that LLMs produce today is good enough to bypass a developer who can judge whether it's correct or not.
