IIRC Campbell was also mainly responsible for the obsession with "psi" which pervades so much SF of that era. He was so utterly convinced that it represented the next stage of human evolution, imminent and wholly beneficial, that

There are still posters everywhere, obviously, and they've increasingly become animated screens here. But the only time I see video-with-sound ads now is at the cinema. My tolerance has dropped enough that it's becoming a signific

I take your point, and I was mostly just pointing out the parallels with OP's description of the US (which also included "soil conservation"). For the CAP, my reading is that most of the payment really is just for "not f

Interesting. We have relatively high rural suicide rates in the UK too, and a similar "paid to not farm" situation via the EU's Common Agricultural Policy, but the causal waters are muddied here by farmers being among the ver

We were almost the exact opposite; I don't think we really touched on ancient and mediaeval writers at all. Not much in the religious vein either, we more topic-centric (personal identity, ethics, formal logic etc) than philosopher-cen

I'm a big B5 fan, but you have to admit there's an awful lot of filler in there. (Also, it definitely wasn't what GP was referring to, since B5 didn't vary its runtime appreciably.)
