Generally agreed, although I think that only really applies to control at the social-network level, not to control exerted via e.g. Chrome or DNS or your ISP. This feels like the start of a very long road.

I was correcting what looked like a significant misapprehension about the subject of the thread, not arguing for a comparison. Although I can't see anything in throwaways885's comment to suggest that they were talking about the po

The SWP is not by any stretch of the imagination a major political party. ETA: to quantify that a bit, in the 2010 General Election the SWP ran as part of the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition. Nationally that coalition received 0.04%

Agreed. Much less of a Mensa syndrome going on. I remember at the peak of the 2016 post-election meltdown the SSC subreddit hosted a sort of "ask Trump supporters anything" thread. Despite the absolute insanity of the time and onl

Agree 100%. What always struck me most about it was the sheer ambition of it - not just the raw scale of the drama, not just setting things up in Season 1 that wouldn't pay off until the very end of Season 5 (if Michael O'Hare h

I think I conflate the two, and I'm not sure that's wrong. I've never seen anyone use Groovy outside Gradle. I mean why would you, if you had a choice?

Yup. Gradle is by far the worst-designed technology I've encountered in ~30 years of programming. Using it not only made me not want to use Gradle, it made me not want to use Java.

I don't really remember enough about that show to comment, but the usual failure mode of Newtonian flight models in visual media is that they're extremely reluctant to depict a ship doing a sustained thrust in the opposite direc

Yeah, Joss 'fesses up to that one in the episode commentary. I don't know if it's "particularly bad" by the standards of screen SF. No shows do it well, and the vast majority don't even try.

Yes, this would be my first suspicion too, especially for a comparison with the 1990s. > For instance, the peak in leaded gasoline use in the late 1970's corresponds to a peak in aggravated assault rates in the late 1990's in

I'd really recommend the books rather than the series (though the latter isn't bad). Chesterton is one of my favourite writers, and the stories are short and easily digestible.

Hmm. If the arrow was actually travelling in a different direction, doesn't that imply that you'd need to be able to cancel the turbulence from that motion? Otherwise it'd appear in the snapshot as contradictory evidence.
