Heh, I stopped looking at this thread almost immediately after "getting over" the initial sting. But I have to say, I still feel that this kind of behavior would be a sane policy. No one´s saying you should hold onto data forever. But havin

Hah! You´re so right. You´re so right. One of the biggest things I taught myself on my last server (teaching myself to be my own sysadmin) was monit. Now, it looks like I need to go the rest of the way and learn Puppet, too. Or something li

I know, I´m an idiot. :P There´s an easy backup option now. A year ago, when I first signed up, the only things I could see were the options to use some of my storage space to make a backup image -- which you have to think of at the get-go,

Yeah, I tried that about 5 minutes ago. They answered my questions like they deleted my linode: as fast as possible. :( I had no idea my bank card was going to expire while I was down here; I´m kicking myself. The only thing that bugs me is

This is a coincidence. I had a funny experience with Linode just today! I´ve been in South America for a few months, and I found out that my bank card (visa) expired a little over a month ago. "Hmm," I thought. "I sure hope that my linode i

I'd like to point out a contrarian view of conditions at some software shops that employ very wet-behind-the-ears programmers. I have worked in a union carpentry shop, as well as a Swift and Company kill floor. I also worked for 7 years as

Or any analogue of being paid for piece-work. I guess some salesmen would fall into this category, as it´s easy to measure their productivity.

Yep -- $170 to the Secretary of State for 'express' service online; get an EIN online with the IRS; get an MN tax id online with MN-Revenue. You can open a bank account with just your articles of incorporation and an EIN, so you can do that

Great Teams Can Do Anything versus Great Surfers Need Great Waves. I always felt as though the discussion was missing something -- and I think that this is it. Competition is different from most startups' vision of success . Growing to c

I agree re: "10k ft" questions. I clicked on this post (hoping) for something slightly different, though: a kind of a "startup lint", a collection of very specific problems that people had, gotchas and things that caught them off guard.

Do you work for Microsoft? I just have to know. I mean, this is a joke post, right? a system failure that created data loss in the core database and the back-up. We rebuilt the system component by component, recovering data

First of all -- did I see a post on here saying that the people "launching rumors against MS" need to take responsibility? That seems odd. This press release is a masterpiece. Here's the bit that sounds the best: We now believe that

The database operations on the nested data were just taking too much processing power. Given that this is Rails, and given that it's certainly SQL involved here, I just have to ask (and I know the answer is probably "yes") --

I'm happy for you guys, and I wish you well. If you ever visit Ecuador, you can get to me via superluc at gmail; starting in December, surf gets good. I'm still in the states, but I'll be back in two weeks -- staying for 10 months this time
