On something like a Sup720 that's a 600MHz MIPS processor, so it's not going to break any speed records. And forwarding traffic is considered lower priority than essential things like routing protocols so once you start hitting th

There are only 18k IPv6 routes at the moment so the 256k in the default CAM allocation is way too much. In fact you could argue that this whole incident was made worse by Cisco believing people when they said v6 was going to take off, and w

The lack of a legal secondary market can also mess with your accounting. If you don't have the right to resell the equipment because you are the sole owner of the license to the software, then its value is basically zero as soon as you

As I understand it we came close a few days ago but finally rolled over 512K today at which point some routers hit their hardware limits and either stop learning new routes or start forwarding in software. There is a lot of chatter about it

Slackware has always used BSD init scripts and it's one of the oldest distros. You used to be able to choose any init system you wanted but it seems that systemd is becoming entwined with "Linux" in some nasty ways. I wonder

Right on red was introduced in the 70s to save on fuel back when cars had massive engines and weren't very fuel efficient. As there are more and more hybrid or pure electric cars on the road, the efficiency gains are going down. And he

The window for losing two disks is reduced though, because rebuilding a single drive failure is much faster in a RAID 10 system where it's just a drive copy, as opposed to n drive reads and a parity calculation.

Practically yes, erasure coding solutions do tend to have a lot of hard drives. That's probably because their efficiency really makes them much cheaper for people who are buying lots of storage, for a small setup the cost of the drives

The DNS ecosystem is much more diverse. djbdns is considered to be the most secure, and there are a few other quality implementations. The root servers, for example, run a mixture of BIND and NSD, so no single bug can affect all of them.

Right, but you already have to buy two switches for redundancy right, what else are you going to plug those servers into? I get what you're saying about stability etc but BGP is a core function of a networking operating system. I do ag

It's a cool hack because you probably already have bought the hardware to do this. Most decent switches these days can run BGP (or at least OSPF, which is capable of the same thing). And switches are usually way cheaper than hardware l

Routers already do this, it's generally called fast external fallover. If an interface on the router goes down it immediately takes down whatever BGP peer was coming across that link.

One reason is that versioning is really hard. Now that Python comes standard with Linux distros, and in fact some of the built in tools are written in Python, it becomes really hard to upgrade. So you can never touch the version that your O
