> I live in a small village and there is currently discussion going on about extending the legal amount of time a person can keep holiday decorations on their house. The need for some people to police *everything* is exhausting.

I pay $0.07 per kwh in Portland, OR. My Tesla Y gets roughly 3 miles per kwh. So 30 miles for $0.70. At $5/gal and 20mpg, you'll pay $7.50 for 30 miles.

Do you think no software should ever upgrade dependencies? Do you think it's unreasonable to want to take advantage of new features in newer versions? Why should I lock Sidekiq to Redis 3 forever? When am I allowed to require Redis 4?

I'm the author of Sidekiq. Sidekiq didn't kill RTG, they chose to die. RTG decided not to offer future versions of Redis past 3.x. Once the owners stop investing time and effort into a company, they're choosing to let it die

The actual reason for that space is a shoulder for breakdowns. They paint a line on it and call it a bike lane for PR. A usable bike lane needs physical protection (and not be usable by cars at all).

Farmers have to let fields lie fallow every N seasons, gardens must be weeded. You could easily argue that if a CTO or VP Eng doesn't already understand and agree with this, they aren't qualified for the job.

I just switched my Portland electric plan to time of day billing. It’s 33c per kWh from 5-9pm and 7c all other hours. The idea is to minimize the number of natural gas peaker plants they need running as the sun goes down.

If it doesn't support macOS or Windows, how do you suggest developers on those platforms use it? An install guide for those platforms (even if it's mostly Docker commands) would be extremely useful.

They are plastic today because earlier they were steel and rusted. Thus the “rustproof undercoating” which some dealers offered. A mechanic said my 1990 Honda CRX was mostly rust after 6 years in the Northeast US.

I'd encourage you to read the People's History of the United States. Who's "we"? I don't think a single Black American would agree with your statement.

The 14” MBP has a 70 watt-hour battery so a 55W draw will drain the battery in just over an hour. And that’s just the CPU.

It's maddening that there's no audit trail or public record you can use to debug "why?". I had my domain put on a phishing blacklist due to DNS caching. During a 30 minute cache window, I decommissioned a server and a ba

But to have no sunsetting. Unreal. I believe they were bought by private equity a few years back and their MO is: buy, leverage and go bankrupt. This fits that pattern.

I’m just shocked and amazed. Presumably this company had hundreds of employees, millions in revenue, etc. what would have caused them to disappear like this? I’m guessing there is a large legal aspect we haven’t heard about yet. Somebody di

Liberal governments will do everything but the one thing that will solve the problem: make it much, much easier to actually build more housing. Everything else is just pointless busywork.

I couldn't have said it better. Other ecosystems decided to use lots of little dependencies and I can't imagine a worse engineering decision. This way lies madness.
