I keep meaning to write a simple client to get some networking code practice. It's been sometime since I wrote some. > It's what an open protocol should be. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I agree, but I also want to w

I used IRC Cloud for some time. Pretty good, actually. Works almost everywhere, nice UI. It's certainly no irssi in a tmux/screen, but it's pretty good. Costs $5/month when I was using it (so close to the same as a VPS o

Not a programmer at the time, but a system administrator. I won't mention the company. This was 2011-2012 -ish. We hosted dedicated servers and most of the time, they were mostly Plesk or cPanel servers run by people selling email and

I reckon companies like Google, Microsoft, Apple, $bigCorp, probably calculate the ROI of the venture before executing it. So for example in this case, I wouldn't be surprised if Google calculated a high chance of pocketing $5b and exp

This applies to virtually every technology in existence. I've never had to explain what Serverless means to another engineer, only people, like management, who tend to be non-technical :)

What configuration? I use AppEngine for a personal project I'm developing, and besides the app.yml file, which is about five lines long, I don't configure a thing. In fact, I don't even have to stand up databases to use one:

Perfect for me: develop the front end using Qt (on an OSS licence) and Go, which is just a dumb data rendering layer with caching, and keep all the actual business logic server-side. I'll happily open-source a "shell" :)
