What will the problems of the next generation be, and how do we prepare them for that? On the face of it the next few generations face huge issues. The only thing we know for certain is that the way we live now is totally unsustainable in

I mostly agree with the gist of the video in that learning to program is empowering and can sometimes result in a job. However, the type perk-laden of working environments shown are unrealistic, and limited to large companies such as Googl

To prepare people for what's coming in the next 5-10 years. If cities become panopticons overnight that would induce a greater degree of alarm and popular resistance to the idea. Introducing things gradually such that people become habitu

Couldn't agree more. It's a trend which I've also been noticing - i.e. tiny text or tiny light grey text on a white background. A few CTRL-+'s fix the problem, but I shouldn't really need to do that in the first place.

Based upon this list I might be a member of this future counter-culture. I fit 5 out of the 7 criteria, although I wouldn't characterise myself as being anti-technology.

Not that I care much about these karma values, but ideally something like this should be part the HN site itself.

The main thing about about Facebook, or other similar sites, is to ask yourself how much value you're getting out of it versus how much time you're spending on it. It you're spending a lot of time but not getting much value then it may not

The whole concept of overeducation seems foreign to me. Surely people should strive to be as educated as they can or want to be. The background assumption is that education isn't really about education, and is instead merely about training

Really I wouldn't want just a busybox terminal. I already have that on Android. It's ok, but has limited functionality. What I'd want would be the full range of typical GNU commands.

There should be a reasonable way to deal with this. Whenever keys are added just scan them for "RSA PRIVATE KEY" and warn the user that only public keys should be added.

An uncannily accurate prediction of the tablet computer as we know it now. These didn't appear in 2000, although by that time there were PDAs with touch screens.

I like how they talk about it as if not using Facebook is some extraordinary privation. I havn't used it for two years, and I officially closed my account a year ago.

Right. But in the real world almost nobody actually reads the TOS and even fewer understand it. Expecting people to read and be sufficiently informed by what's written to deliberatively agree to TOS is unrealistic in most cases.

Cohesive, insular cultures are more likely to suffer from group-think and to tolerate bad behavior. This article seems like bad advice because when everyone thinks alike it's more difficult to spot and correct mistakes.

It's silly to write off the Ubuntu phone OS before it has even been released. The argument about not being a first mover is also spurious. Google wasn't a first mover in search. Bill Gates wasn't a first mover in home computer operating

There's a long history of the use of pseudoscience by companies to pick job candidates. In the 1980s there was a craze for handwriting analysis, where a person's handwriting style was supposed to reveal various aspects of their personality
