Currently x86_64 to aarch64. It's a bootstrapping problem. It takes a lot of infra to run the first build host. We can transition to aarch64 for build hosts if we see the need later. Having cross-compilation makes things much easier

I have been working to move Uber's stack to arm64 during 2022[1]. We are quite far ahead. I can say the ecosystem to compile stuff is pretty good, at least for our primary targets C++ and Go. We don't have performance numbers to

Folks, there is a good reason this is a subscriber-only content. It takes time and effort (and money!) to keep us up to date. For such a long time. This is the 5'th SubscriberLink over the last week on HN: https://hn.algolia

If we ignore the proposal, this gives at least an awesome overview of the state-of-the-art of logging in go. That was the best part. Thanks for the heads up!

My blog was hugged once. Static webpage served with golang's net/http. Not more than 2% cpu load (single core), 20-30 requests/second. The problem was the default number of file descriptors. Once bumped that, all went well fo

A tarball of tarballs, layered using barely documented rules (e.g. you can add a directory, remove it on upper layer, and re-add something else on top). Constructing them is easier than unpacking. :)

I wrote undocker[1], which converts a docker "container" to a rootfs tarball. I really wish docker container format were documented as well as squashfs here. Surprising, given Docker Inc should have had enough resources to make th

I first tried rust in 2015[1]. It was my first serious attempt at rust. The language was not small whatsoever at the time. It was not fun. [1]: https://github.com/motiejus/makelua/tree/rust

It makes sense to pre-compress the static assets. Then the server can load the compressed ones directly, without requiring to link to the compressor, and of course pay the price of online compression. I create two extra files for each stati

Some services span many many hosts (not sure I can say how many though). Not because they are inefficient; that's because it takes many cpus to do to support our trips/eaters/etc. Most of the services benefit from speed/

Good suggestion, though the title of my original talk (in the linked video) was even less assuming: "How Zig is used at Uber". Will not change it now though, as this blog post is the last piece of this talk+announcement effort.

Any photos of how the ethernet expansion card will look like while plugged in? Looks like it's bigger than the expansion slot. I intend to keep it there permanently, which brings questions about durability, especially when carrying the

You said EU? Uber (my team) is hiring in Vilnius, if you are into Eastern Europe. I have been there for 6 years, can recommend. Feel free to send me your CV (contact details in my profile), I'll comment or put it to our system.

Hi Stephen, The initial example works for me. Truly impressive packaging you've achieved. I tried to build for musl, but it still links with glibc; is musl supported, or am I doing it wrong? motiejus ~/code/mach/gpu

I highly recommend adding it. It doesn't have to be exposed, but is super useful for anyone who will want to reproduce or build upon your work later. You can embed this to the PDF, e.g. see section A.1 [1] for how. [1]: https:/&#

Links to external sites have a tendency to rot. I've stumbled upon a number of scientific papers from 2000s that include links to sourceforge for code listings. Most of those are dead now. Github will not be there for ever.

I implemented Wang–Müller algorithm, described it, and embedded the code to the pdf, along with tooling how to generate the example diagrams of the paper (and the whole paper). Everything is in the pdf[1]. Arxiv.org won't accept a pdf

Undocker reads and writes tarballs. So yes. Running them is a different story. I've never tried systemd user services, so can't tell. Curious myself. :)
