I bet big deciding factors were that the IDE is eclipse-based and it's a statically-typed language that is "close" to Java. That limited his choices quite a bit.

This story reminded me of the Boston bombing and it's "lockdown" (read martial law). Didn't Boston have one of these APCs roaming the streets during its martial law. In that case it's really a show of force again

This is probably more of "If we scare people by throwing around the terrorist word then we get to spend money, have cool new toys, and look badass". It's pathetic, but it seems to work.

It was pretty much assured that someone was going to come along on this story and label David as a "defector". I'll have to disagree with a blog post story a few days ago about the maturity of the Scala community.

I see a lot of libertarian and anti-government sentiments expressed on HN. And I see a lot of leftists on HN that are surprised that this is the case. Why is that? The question - and only question - should be what David Simon asks: are

For a leftist like Piers Morgan, it was a complete embarrassment to have a low-information voter asking ignorant questions when Mike Rowe just completely schooled her. I think your typical university is in panic mode right now. In 10-15 ye

This is what happens when you give a bunch of leftist/statists that dominate school systems security power. These statist so-called educators see themselves as quasi-government officials. It's sickening, but this is what people v

Not even close. Intellij is more of a platform than just a Java IDE these days. They're busy at work on Kotlin, and still have all the other languages and frameworks to work on. Great job Jetbrains. Although I'm primarily a .NET

Wrong. There are choices and not everybody is spastically out of control like apparently you would be for a few stitches. You people have such a hard time with simple concepts, such as an ideologically disagreement on the role of government

I picked up a couple Korean 27" 1440ps for the desktop for around $300 and loving them. They're even overclockable.

Because of Clojure's dynamic typing and idiomatic use of lots of nested expressions it turns out to be a read-only language for me. Scala seems to have a huge image problem. I think part of the problem is that Odersky and crew have ne

So it's not really the ideology that is the problem, but the implementation of the ideology. We've seen this before. "Communism hasn't really been tried before". It's pretty sickening the number of people on H

Don't worry. You'd be better off using a normal text editor anyway. GTK+ is flaky on non Linux/BSD systems. They should note what some of the OpenDylan folks are doing and write a plugin for Intellij.

Agreed, and in my primary language, C#, these days I would rather just write static classes with static methods and pass in other static methods instead of messing around with interfaces all the time. I write ASP.NET MVC so I don't u

Ever since I started playing around with Java (or even earlier with C++) having data co-mingled with functions has never felt right to me. It just never seemed very extensible to me, especially in a language like Java. Even in C# where yo
