Terrifying stuff... and then two months later NATO pulls off operation Able Archer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Able_Archer_83 A part of me rather likes the thought that if we're all going to perish, it's because of someone's cock-up.

The report reveals that there were no actual temperatures left in the computer database when NASA/NCDC proclaimed 2005 as “THE WARMEST YEAR ON RECORD.” This sentence leaves me disinclined to continue reading the article. Is this going to

Yup, that was my exact reaction, even more disturbing after having read a couple of newspapers this morning and wondering quite what had changed so rapidly ;) A bit of a personal coincidence for me as well, don't know why but for some reaso

I like SVN when working for various companies, as it's a hell of a lot easier to explain to some of the choice employees than Git. That said, I personally consider Git to be the far superior system if you invest the time learning how it w

I've seen houses covered in locks, and all the locks do is make me think that the owner must have lots of valuables inside if they have locks like that. I guess thieves must think the same thing.

Theft and burglary are, in the vast majority of cases, crimes of opportunity. That's the only point I can think of that favours locking one's door. Otherwise, if you have something someone really, really wants to steal, they'll find a way.

To be honest, the only time I've seen glob() used was with an outsourced code bomb that was written to delete all the code if a get variable (think it was delete_everything) was passed, presumably in case we didn't pay up. We paid, and surp

One of the main difficulties is obtaining a banking licence so that you can accept consumer deposits. Personally, I like Virgin's take on this; buy a small bank that already has a licence and go from there: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finan

I've heard coders of all abilities say orientated and oriented, and was under the impression they were interchangeable. One that I have heard repeatedly is MySequel from the Windows devs, and S-Q-L Server from the other side :)

Heh, I moved to Poland three months ago from my native England, and the one thing that's really helping me with the language is setting my Windows installation to be in Polish. Note: I guess this step isn't necessary if, unlike me, you don'
