I get it - you’re mocking the parent’s framing of this as a security issue. Perhaps it isn’t an issue for you, but in case it’s not obvious, calendar entry titles and descriptions can (and have) contained confidential information that would

Makes me wonder if this plan inspired the wacky nuclear premise of the 1970s sci-fi series Space 1999 ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SpX8bVEmJo ) > The premise of Space: 1999 centres on the plight of the inhabitants of

I too(?) briefly interpreted the unformatted HN title as some kind of profound commentary on climate change (perhaps) or more generally our predisposition to destroying ourselves. "Huh, that's an original and oddly specific metaph

Interesting! What kind of company and technology domain is it? Assuming you don’t want to get too specific. My first reaction is that I like this idea, but maybe I’m biased because I feel I’d “pass the test” myself (and thus have one additi

I don't really regret quitting - I was getting pretty depressed at my previous job, and not working at all was a vast improvement. I perhaps could've persuaded myself to jump back in 3-6 months earlier, before the job market fell

Thank you. I think this is actually already me, but I need to get better (and/or more confident) at selling/marketing the “leg(s)” of the “T”. Particularly when it’s something I did more than a few years ago, but I know I still ha

Would you reconsider the stereotyping if I told you I’m a generalist who has worked up and down many kinds of stacks? It’s proving hard to sell generalist-ness to recruiters this round. They often lock on to the most recent specific domain

I’m not a citizen, but I’m holding out for a pure “tech” company for now anyway for various reasons. Thanks for the hint anyway - perhaps someone else will benefit.

Not just you. I would guess, optimistically, I’m averaging a 5% conversion rate of applications to recruiter chats/“stage 0 interviews”. That is, ~95% of applications yield silence or a generic email rejection without any human contact

I love this horrible, clever, horrible tech and this writing style. The first paragraph links to a related earlier post, and I can confirm it’s also worth reading in case you skipped it: https://cohost.org/cathoderaydude

I agree with your disagree. The very idea of "making sense" is a human construct. The universe doesn't care about making sense - to us or otherwise, except to the extent that we are part of it, and some of us care. There'

Thanks for this - you inspired me to finally get a library card! Unfortunately I can’t find anything on ConsumerLab about my go-to unflavored whey protein powder (Natural Factors). I guess no news is better than bad news.

I had one this week! Not a total "bomb", but I'm claiming recency privilege in order to talk about it anyway. Did a full loop with a company notorious for asking Leetcode "hard" coding questions. I've been prac

I remember the same thing with magazines for 8-bit machines and later the Commodore Amiga as the user bases and readerships declined. But not just the thinner page count - sometimes your favorite magazine also switched to thinner (cheaper)

Senior Software Engineer is indeed the title for L5 SWE at Google. However, whether a "senior software engineer" title is considered "senior" in a general sense these days is debatable.

In retrospect, it reminds me of the Amazon logo [0]. The orange swoopy thing evokes the Amazon A-to-Z "smile" (2000 onwards, although they had a more generic orange swoopy thing before that). Never noticed that similarity before.

Wondering the same. Maybe they meant "US FAANG salaries" very literally, i.e. just the salary, not the bonus and equity... If they really mean US FAANG total compensation, my guess is quant trading firms.
