I feel like this is sheer incompetence on Twitter’s part. Some ad blocker I have on my iPhone stops Twitter from working and has for several months. It hasn’t prevented * Me seeing adverts on Twitter * Me being tracked by Twitter. It’s yet

I remember being a teenager walking around forests listening to Live In The City Of Light. Portable music already existed, in the form of boomboxes, but Walkmen were personal with a whole different dynamic. I think people these days don’t r

The question then becomes: if the market is producing near-monopolies of stuff that is barely fit for purpose, how do we fix the market?

To the best of my knowledge (which isn’t great) .NET has multiple compilation levels for functions, using more time after a method has been called a few times. But starts with a pretty fast but naive compilation. It also, I believe, special

Yeah, the Rust proponents are being significantly more ambitious. Not just the ability to code a file system in Rust, but do it in a way that catches a lot of the correctness issues relating to the complex (and changing) semantics of FS dev

Irrespective of whether you think these restrictions were justified, it’s hard not to sniff a whiff of political expediency in loosening them right now.

Honestly I don’t care. I can tell the difference between old blue check and new blue check, but by retaining the exact same representation can be considered deceptive whatever the merits or otherwise of the previous system.

I think one of the big things about downvotes is that it works better for a homogenous user base. Otherwise you can get in a situation where one group votes up and another votes down. It’s fairly obvious this happens on HN itself but the HN

In short: UK has no place there, US has no place there. A whole bunch of refugees probably do have a place there but no-one cares about them. Also crimes are probably being committed over and above what I’ve just described. In other words:

I think it’s okay to say “This is the benchmark, now I’m going to compare it against something else.” It’s up to the reader to decide if a 3% (or 300%) improvement is worth the investment if it involves learning a whole other language.

Python is the right thing to compare to here, because it is easily the most popular way to perform these computations in the modern day. Specifically using numpy. The overhead isn't that high, but as mentioned elsewhere in this thread,

Take a look at the gender pay gap reports large companies produce. It’s very much a problem even with people sat next to one another doing the same job. As I’ve said elsewhere in this thread, people take it as axiomatic that markets would r

I think people underestimate how powerful market forces are. Bear in mind that they do not apply within a firm, except in fairly extreme circumstances. Instead most things are done on the basis of perception, which is where racism and patri
