If this is true then that’s a sign that we are measuring the wrong things when we talk about “the economy”. If something is good for the economy but bad for people, then fuck the economy. Find a new way to measure it that better aligned wi

It’s infuriating how true this seems to be. Especially in politics, so many big-name news sites across the entire political spectrum seem to consistently run stories that collapse instantly when checked. How on earth do they still exist wit

Exactly! If a site gives me useful info and leads me to more, the site is much more likely to be the FIRST place I look for similar stuff next time. Otherwise they go on a mental blacklist and I never click on the links to that site in th

I have mixed feelings here. On one hand, more hardware makers supporting Linux is good. On the other, I don’t really feel like I want the kind of pre-installed “support” software Lenovo has given Windows to come to Linux.

UHS-I did add a dual-edge mode at 50MHz, but SD never got up to the 8 bits MMC supports (also at about 50 MHz, so UHS-I should be roughly half the speed of high-end MMC). UHS-II went to LVDS instead, which despite using fewer lanes can supp

Yeah, as far as I can tell the carriers want me to want it because it’s better for them. But they have so far failed to convince me that it does anything better than LTE for me . All the sales pitches are about either lower cost to network

Lincoln used marshal law during the civil war and even that was deemed unconstitutional in some areas. As long as there are functioning civil courts, marshal law is not considered justified, as I understand it.

Something like that should come with a massive political cost - maybe after the crisis, all sitting politicians become ineligible for re-election on the basis that they shouldn’t have let it come to that point in the first place.

I had recently seen a claim that among the first 5 US cases, some had been apparent community spread, but searching back now I can’t find any substantiation for that claim. So yeah, looks like my assumptions here were wrong. Sorry. Using th

Why start today? There were 5 cases confirmed in the US as of Jan 25, 50 days ago, at least some of which appeared to be community transmission. Applying this math for the US as a whole with the 10x initial factor gives 5 * 10 * 2^(50/

To look at it the other direction, 5.8 g/km times 75,000 km means they have to somehow produce 435 kg of pollution per set of tires. Without some more explanation (are they building some kind of model to extrapolate to the entire suppl

Paying facebook’s users for facebook’s spy network isn’t quite the right [dis]incentive though. I don’t use Facebook but they still pay others to spy on me. Those others should have to pay me for the spying they do on me.

I found so much of math I had learned previously in the “it’s weird but this works if you take it on faith” sense was suddenly blatantly obvious after learning some abstract algebra. I wish I had learned that stuff way earlier. In the case

I think this is correct, and that a good illustration is planetary orbits - 2 bodies alone can never collide if they didn’t start out in intersecting trajectories. They need a third to perturb their movements or they will just keep orbiting
