Trust is key no matter where they work. With a small company if you can't trust someone to be as productive as you need them to be (regardless of if you're looking over their shoulder or not) you probably shouldn't hire them. The exceptio

It also depends on your model. Our business hinges on our domain knowledge and expertise. We share some but not all. We want to give to the community, but still maintain a competitive advantage.

Comments, although disappointingly I always seem to get a big karma spike for throwaway one-liners, and what I consider my more contributing/interesting comments tend to be ignored. I know I'm not the only one, but it can be frustrating.

If they're using a decent hash algo, manufacturing a collision should be somewhat difficult and I'm really not sure how you could use it as a believable legal defense later.

I had the same issue. Instantly cured it by disabling the "Automatic graphics switching" option. Hopefully there will be a better fix forthcoming, but for now it's pretty easy to solve. Even with that headache, this is by far the best la

Yes they really exist. Some niches pay more like 20k+/mo pretty easily. Consulting at 150/hour isn't that hard. If you want specific advice learn an eCommerce framework really really well or become a deployment specialist for large clust

If you're renting out your spare room 70-100% of the time, why don't you just get a roommate? Seems like it would be safer, less work, and you'd ideally have a better long term relationship.

I switched away from Comcast over to Verizon because Comcast has a 250 GB cap (even if you're paying for their 50/10 service), and Verizon doesn't cap you. At 50 Mbit down from Comcast I could use up my entire monthly allowance in just ove

IMHO a much better question is: "how can we help our programmers be more productive?" Long hours only "help" for a pretty short time period, so making the core 8 hours/day more productive is a much more sustainable approach. In my experien

Apache isn't that bad. I haven't used nginx, so I can't speak to it, but the reason I haven't is that I can push 500+ Mbps out of a single box running Apache with just some basic configs. mod_php may be slow, but Apache itself is plenty f

Yes actually I've pushed changes back at companies like Cingular and AT&T, and semi-large consulting firms like NCS Tech, and others. The HR rep will usually think I'm odd, but it's saved my butt at least once, so it's worth a couple o

In general you should avoid signing the standard contracts at any job. I've always made changes to protect my after-hours work, and they've been okayed every single time.

Agreed. Every large company I've worked with has had scripts that create sanitized versions of the production DB, with PCI and PII stripped out or masked to allow for testing against full size datasets. It's not hard to do.

I disagree with this. While I'm not saying I was ever "poor" (as I never felt poor), I started out working for $5.15/hour, and sleeping on a friend's couch while I tried to find an apartment I could afford. Then I moved into a boston apar

Indeed, however if you're running your own server(s) then firewalls/monitoring/IDS/etc... need to be part of your typical setup anyhow. I wouldn't suggest someone who doesn't admin their own servers to get a server for running mail on, but
