Yep. When I was using win7 with 2gb of ram, I was basically managing it manually - as soon as memory usage hit 90-95%,I was shutting apps down. If I let it swap, it would often hang completely.

Well, this is about establishing priors. If something seems unlikely, maybe our understanding of it is wrong? Concepts like Anthropic principle have been introduced to deal with the fact that we exist, however unlikely it may seem.

This seems like evidence towards Gwern's theory that pineapple fund is a retired dark net drug dealer...

left-pad only adds 7ms on edge, seems worth it. On the other hand, Jquery adds almost a second. And you hardly ever see pages that don't use it. (Unless they use some other heavy js library). But it's just soo convenient.

There might be some insight in this article, but the tone makes it unbearable to read for me. Halfway between apocalyptic and condescending.

If latency is not a problem, but the production/consumption is unsteady, use a large buffer. Works in programming, works in personal finance.

They are independent, and that's exactly why they aren't additive. Flipping a coin two times doesn't give you a 100% chance of getting heads. To expand on the intuition a little - they may well hit the same non-target spot mu

Interesting website, clearly a ton of work went into it. If you are like me, and full length paragraphs are impossible to read for you, here's a handy bookmarklet I use for such websites: javascript:(function() { node = document.cr

This is true of many things, but seems to be politically unpopular to notice. The right will claim that prices are what prices are and cannot be changed, and the left will claim it's all in resource allocation.

Yes, obviously. Although those often are to some degree a result of corruption. But I am not claiming the government is universally worse at all things.

Sure, some state-run universities are good. But that's just one example. There's many examples of things that govt's fail badly at. And many examples of things they manage OK, sometimes better than the private sector. It'

I get your point, but also... You are complaining that they are not willing to give their work away, unless you are willing to give your work away.

Well, basically they only want to give it away for free, if you actually cannot pay for it. That seems reasonable. But I agree, an OS alternative would be great, and this seems like it could be it.

I hope you are joking. The way to enforce such constraints is definitely not by disabling them in software. Imagine trying to just fix some outside presentation, and wondering why it doesn't work. Just teach people the basics, it'

Actually, XLS is not bad to work with, if you have a library for it. And it's well defined, unlike CSV. Insofar as I know, there's no way to make a CSV file that will open and show nicely in all popular versions of excel / go
