One of the many differences between programming and medicine, law, etc is that entry into the latter fields is tightly controlled by governing bodies. Anybody can read a programming book and start working, but only so many law students gra

I was surprised that he ran siege against www.google.co.uk without some kind of "don't do this" disclaimer to new users. Running it against other people's websites is pretty poor form.

It's because width and height are set to zero. And since the browser tapers the edge of the borders, you get a triangle shape.

A while back I remember using an extension that would restore all of your previous tabs on start up, but not actually load them until you clicked on them. It fixed the situation you describe, but sadly it looks like it no longer works with

The problem that I see with the certificate of origination idea is that then the patent trolls will file for literally millions of certificates of origination. Then they'll just send you threatening letters asking for a settlement and you

People are more likely to buy umbrellas online on days when it's raining. Though it will certainly rain again, whereas hopefully we won't see that many riots over our lifetimes.

I don't think Google's suggestion that patents are bad is at odds with them trying to buy $3B of them. Whether or not they like patents, they still have to deal with the effects. They claim that they tried to buy the patents as a defensive

I assume that is referring to Paul Graham's assertion that a good developer isn't just a little better than an average developer, but is instead orders of magnitude better.

I can't imagine it's considered a vulnerability. Heroku has had a documented `heroku console` that can do at least as much as bash can, security-wise.

For non-gui work it mostly lives up to that promise, but if you're building a consumer app you end up having to do a lot of tweaking per-platform.

Check out ARel. (it's in ActiveRecord 3, part of Rails) It uses relational algebra and is pretty good about letting you mix and match: enabled = User.where(:disabled => false) enabled.group("date(created_at)").having("created

Now that I think of it, it would actually be pretty easy to write a github-archive tool that would clone a repo, compress it, push to s3, then delete from github using the API. It could even do the reverse, as well.

That would be useful. Archive.org is better at not breaking than I imagined it would be, but still often leaves broken assets. The combination of the two would be really cool: see the page, and how the page was viewed at the time.
