It actually looks like it may be possible to cross-sync back and forth between two buckets, but I haven't tried it. In our case we're ok with going into read-only mode for a bit.

If you're worried about a datacenter losing power, a multi-AZ strategy is fine. Hardware issues happen so often and with so little impact that we rarely hear about them. The issues that I'm primarily concerned about at this point

By the way, turning on S3 bucket versioning is safe in that your objects will get served exactly the same over HTTP. However, with many of the AWS SDKs you will start receiving an S3::VersionedObject rather than an S3::Object. From there yo

It depends on how much your data gets accessed. Your data storage costs (~$0.03/GB) double, but your transfer out costs (~$0.05-$0.09/GB) stay the same. The replication cost is often pretty negligible compared to regular traffic.

The reality is most customers are not affected, and overall service uptime is highest anywhere around. Unfortunately it's really impossible to say in this case, since they don't release numbers. Informally everyone I know with S

Depending on your use case, it may be slightly easier to accomplish this with s3 event notifications + AWS Lambda to write to a different region or service. Importantly, make sure you CNAME your bucket under your own domain so that you can

It doesn't help in this case since they're third-party APIs, but if you controlled the backend it seems like a good application for bloom filters.

How does the Third-Party Doctrine date back to the framers? I'm pretty sure it wasn't coined until the 60s, but are there court cases from earlier than that?

True, but with NSQ being brokerless, the lines are somewhat blurred between client and server. Each of our app servers has its own local nsqd. If that nsqd stops responding, we take the app server out of the load balancer. The local nsqd pu

In addition to the node/iojs reasoning, I think nw.js is a clearer name. Node-webkit makes it sound like it's just webkit bindings for node, whereas it's quite a bit more than that. Fusing the node and webkit runloops togethe

Sure, but the base_backup process is painful enough to make it non-trivial. It's not like you can just bring up a new postgres instance, point it at an existing primary and say "catch up and start replicating". Replication ha

For many workloads that's fine, but it sounds like some people have found that using the OS socket handling doesn't distribute very evenly among processes in some cases: http://strongloop.com/strongblog/whats-

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure from iOS you can use canOpenURL to determine whether an app exists. This is probably the method they're using to gather data.

We learned about this particular outage from health checks we had set up in Pingdom. Somebody like them could expose those checks as a public service, and try to become the go-to place for getting the real status of AWS.

YQL is one of my favorite Yahoo services, but I hesitate to use it in projects due to its unreliability / uncertain future. It would be great to have an open source clone that was deployable to Heroku or similar.
