Improved our GIF encoding pathway to increase throughput. I'd be curious to hear exactly what they did around this. I recently worked on some gif encoding, and was surprised that there's actually quite a tradeoff to be made betw

What about shopping your book concept around to publishers, validating that there's interest (and that they think you're capable), then if there is, self-publishing?

Why do you say that? All of the metadata is at the beginning, followed by sequential frames.

Ok, that might have been an oversimplification on my part, maybe "isn't a natural fit" would have been better. I'm sure there's enough value there that you could have eventually made a business out of it.

It seems almost universally better? I can't think of any acquirer that would be more successful with Sandstorm than the founders themselves. Nobody I can think of is aligned with "users own their data" and big enough / c

Employees are effectively making an investment in the company in the form of work instead of cash. If a startup chose not to give out stock options, they'd likely have to pay their employees more, and they may have to raise another rou

Sure, any new piece of infrastructure we add has the possibility for reducing reliability. We only introduce things we think we can support, and that add value for the company. YMMV. We also have less than 15 minute incident engagement time

Honestly, think you've taken advice that is generally true ("service providers that focus on a problem can do it better than you") and applied it as dogma even when there are plenty of cases where it is flat out incorrect.

I disagree. In the last few years S3 has had multiple of these black swan events, while the reverse proxies I am talking about have pushed through hundreds of billions of responses and have had significantly fewer incidents. (In this case,

I still think a lot of this depends on your availability requirements. I don't think I could run an S3 service at the scale AWS does with higher reliability, but I do believe I can run a pool of redundant HAProxies with higher reliabil

Ah, fortuitous timing! :) If you were looking to protect yourself against S3 going down and had bigger drives, I assume you could use cron to sync the entire bucket and use `try_files` to prefer local and fall back to S3 if the file was mis

This incident lasted for three hours. The last incident was in 2015 and was also a significant amount of time. Sentry can likely provision a new HAProxy node in minutes. Most importantly, while S3 is relatively stable it's a black box.

One thing that complicates easy replication is the rules around CNAMEing your S3 bucket to a subdomain you control. You have to name the bucket subdomain.your-domain.com.s3.amazonaws.com, then CNAME subdomain to s3.amazonaws.com. Your repli

While not actually a real-life browser, Phantom 2.5 is _much_ closer to a real-life browser engine than it was previously.

I would imagine that the reason many companies are reluctant to do this (or at least don't advertise it) is because advising employees whether they should or should not do it amounts to giving financial planning advice. Asking hard eno

Sure, though I think this is somewhat specific to serverless because in traditional applications, authentication usually covers all interactions with the user whereas with serverless you sometimes have to figure it out on a case-by-case bas

For #1, I would probably disallow writing to arbitrary paths and instead generate a path prefix using a UUID and return that to the client to ensure that every upload is unique.

This article makes it sound like upload requests are restricted to your domain via CORS, but that is one of the pitfalls of thinking about everything through a serverless lens: while another site could not use javascript to directly upload

The "work" in this case would be the modified AGPL service. Using a reverse proxy, the "end user" would be the person running the reverse proxy, so you would owe source modification code to yourself, but nobody else.

Not a lawyer, but the challenge I see with AGPL is that it leaves room for ambiguous interpretation. My reading of it says (paraphrasing) "if you combine AGPL software with your program and that program interacts with others over the n

The solution described above is pretty much what Google's AMP does. It turns out that a lot of people don't like AMP because they see it as a monopolistic way of keeping users in Google's walled garden. HN doesn't quite

Route53 is basically the solution you describe with DNS records, and you could build out anycast DNS servers yourself if you wanted. The main thing to be aware of is that not all clients respect TTLs. We set a 30s ttl and see a 99% switchov
