There were some very interesting concepts of how to rebuild the cathedral. I gained appreciation for them by realizing that the destroyed spire had been added relatively recently. I think it would have been amazing to choose one of the s

Your statements regarding the Electoral College here are horribly simplistic and ill-informed about the separation of powers and system of checks and balances. There were no functioning constitutional republics (the US was never intended t

As we hit physical limits of what we can power and cool, I expect software will have to be more aware of those limits. Heterogeneous computing is going to be the norm in everything. Since we’ve trained a generation of programmers to be ha

I had some friends who worked at Alexa. I recall they had these bare metal servers down in the basement in these old barracks buildings in the Presidio. I recall being impressed that the whole thing ran on a 1GbE connection. Also was my

Yesterday I wanted to grab an image of flowers. Any flowers. I searched on flowers in image search. Google returned a page that was inundated with ads. I had trouble finding an image that I could use because it wasn’t an ad.

I love this comment because it’s true of a lot of hardware startups I’ve seen lately. While they may not be very good at building airplanes, they are absolute savants at issuing press releases

Having known many people who do this kind of a thing as a hobby and semi-professionally I highly doubt there will be much interest from the traditional hot rodding crowd. It’s the mechanical nature of things that they love, the sound of a

The nature of scientific progress isn’t linear so it’s entirely possible that progress is slowing down. I’m not sure how you’d quantify scientific progress though. If you’ve not read Thomas Kuhn’s Structure of Scientific Revolutions , I

Why would shorter wavelength light make computation faster? Silicon is a great absorber below about 1000nm so infrared wavelengths are used. 200nm is ultraviolet.
