The comment you point out reminds me of something Margaret Hamilton said: Also, what became apparent with Apollo – though it is not how it worked – is that it is better to define your system up front to minimise errors, rather than produci

There was a fairly ridiculous promotional video going around YouTube circa 2014 about a couple who “invented” solar roadways. I’ve placed a link here for your amusement. https://youtu.be/qlTA3rnpgzU

Agreed. Would you go to war over your phone? I think the analogy to faith kind of breaks down when you ask that question. I seriously doubt that anyone would be rioting in the streets over loss of access to Facebook. However I do think

This is the world we live in now. Doesn’t matter if you actually harmed someone. What matters now is whether someone feels you as doing harm. The word of the person who perceives harm is taken as fact and the accused has little to no

I’ve had tinnitus since my 20’s from playing in bands and going to rock shows. 25+ years later, I still have it. It’s quiet enough in here right now that I can hear it as I type this.

I briefly worked on an experiment at Fermilab (FNAL) that was trying to measure the birefringence of the vacuum (QED theory states the vacuum is birefringent in presence of magnetic field). Key to the experiment were the final 2 remaining

My god, I feel for these people. When you read stuff like this, you have to wonder why anyone is a public defender and grateful that people sign up. It seems soul crushing even for the most idealistic of people. The caseload results in

This is false. I’ve been at 4 different startups and the ones I made myself key to market success were way better than working in these soul crushing meat grinders like Goog or FB. There’s more to life than TC.

Wireline EE here. ML in the context of wireline communications has been widely studied (grant money works that way). However, at least in wireline communications there isn’t a lot of gain to be had. This is because we have good physical m

Depends on what you consider low frequency. Radio waves can be used to excite vibrational modes. The resultant thermal energy can be used to break chemical bonds.

@twtw was not arguing that one can induce a current in the vacuum. However, I did say that a surface can arc in vacuum. This is because a surface can emit charges either thermally or in presence of a large electric field. This is correct

The vacuum has a finite impedance of ~375ohms so it is not a perfect insulator. This comes from the fundamental magnetic permeability constant mu naught divided by the speed of light. Also interesting is the fact that the vacuum impedance

I don’t think 850nm is a good choice for LIDAR for several reasons. Firstly, the article talks about absorption but that’s not the only phenomenon that they need to be concerned about. The other is scattering and 850nm will scatter from p
