That is such a good way of putting it and I agree wholeheartedly. The body and mind are like the absolute foundation that you build other things on top of. If your mind and body are not sound, then what chance do the other things have?

It's about time we had legislation (at least in the EU) that mandated an option to be able to use physical products in an offline mode. Features that require a connection to the Internet should only be an augmentation at most and not t

Thanks for the book recommendations. I've been looking for something interesting to read.

The utility of Blockchain/crypto is nowhere near AI. At this point I don't even understand how one could viably compare one to the other.

Seems to me like an incentive issue. I can't see why it'd be impossible to recreate a good incentive structure for employees in the public sector so that they'd perform similarly.

Not sure what currency you have in mind, but I'm in Europe and I know it is. In fact, I just checked and it is a meagre €26k according to Glassdoor (median). I don't know why that is. First thought would be that European countries

Whenever articles like this bubbled up, I used to want to delve right in to satisfy some inner need to be deeply knowledgeable about the craft. I don't feel that way anymore now that I'm in my 30s, something flipped. Now I'm

I think you're missing the point. When making these design decisions, you have to ask 'what can go wrong, and what is the implication of that?'. In your example, you can replace the controller with ease if it breaks, but you

My life blew up involuntarily a year ago when my relationship broke down. I wanted to do all sorts of things at the time - sell the (unfinished) house, change my job, move to a different city etc. I read some articles on how to deal with it

Could you elaborate on that? What was bad about your life before you moved and how did it change after the move?

I hate that we do this in so many domains of our lives.. create unrealistic expectations via fake representation and then wonder why so many people are unhappy.

I think so too. Seems to be a common characteristic among compsci publications. It's like "here's a simple thought, now watch me describe it in two paragraphs using the most convoluted lingo I can come up with..."

I think there's value in taking a balanced approach to writing software - use high level PLs and their frameworks but use them well (i.e. take the time to learn them and their patterns, and not just hack away). This way we're not

Maybe I overgeneralised - I had most personal computing devices in mind, which I'm most interested in developing for. I appreciate that there's orders of magnitude more computing devices that do not fall into that category.

Wow, I haven't even thought of that. Imagine this being used together with a chatgpt equivalent. Scam rates are going to go through the roof.

Ha. I'm quite happy that I started off my career coding in C++ and then subsequently moved away towards web tech. It's nice having appreciation for the lower-level aspects of PLs, but I feel more comfortable working at higher leve

I'm not sure how HATEOAS fits here.. it's a rest principle guiding how one should be able to interact with an API to the best of my knowledge. Please clarify.

100% agree on the point that there's now space for niche search engines. I don't think a search engine for everything is a viable goal (there's too much crap to sift through), but I do think there's space for smaller sea

In the same way you can run Google (the search engine) on your own machine. That is, not at all. It's those companies' biggest assets we're talking about.

I moved away from Three. I recently took out a phone contract, initially with Three. Took me two days to realise that they started charging a daily roaming fee while in another country in Europe - £2 a day. I immediately cancelled the contr

I can see this unlocking a new class of card games. Instead of buying a different set of cards, players would only need to buy one set of these e-ink cards, which could be used across a completely new marketplace of card games. They have th

Yes. I made $30k by selling dogecoin that I bought all the way back in 2014. Not a fortune by any means, but a respectable amount nonetheless.

I am addicted to information, but mostly junk. I often check the news, HN, less frequently reddit. I'm pretty sure it's a major contributor to my brain fog. I don't know how to deal with it other than get a dumb phone.

Is it just me who thinks the title is sensationalised? I can barely see any difference between the two, and the one made by the YouTube builds on top of the original one.
