You're right, "technical debt" doesn't raise any sense of urgency. What people actually mean by technical debt is that there is a trade-off to be made: short-term gains at the expense of long-term costs. Your kitchen met

This is true if you think of programming as chunking out "code". But great authors are not great because they can reproduce coherent sentences fast. The same goes for programmers. Actually most of the hard problems don't real

I totally agree. Technical debt is a vague metaphor that is not very helpful. It doesn't accelerate discussions. It doesn't help us make better or quicker decisions. In fact the opposite is true, someone will say something about t

I agree 100%. If you want to deliver valuable software you need short iterations because you need to validate assumptions. Anything you build more than the bare minimum is not included this feedback loop so your assumptions are not getting

Do this metaphors really help anyone? To me it only obfuscates the situation. It doesn't give me any clarity. Honestly "technical debt" doesn't mean much to me and I've seen the words mostly being used as a shieldin

Why specifically programming? I think every knowledge profession is at risk, or at the very minimum suspect to a huge transformation. Doctors, analysts, lawyers, etc.

Is it really such a big deal that there are multiple "good enough" solutions available? I understand it is suboptimal, especially for beginners, but dependency management in Python is a solved problem for a while now. And also the

In my company (large corporate) we only have 3 clusters: dev/acc/prod. Everything runs on it. I love it.

I didn't grow up in the trenches like you did, but nonetheless I think Kubernetes has a very user-friendly API. Imo Kubernetes is only complex because IT infrastructure is complex. It just makes the complexity transparant and manageabl

Public key cryptography (and specifically the Diffie-Hellman key exchange) is arguably the greatest mathematical discovery of the 20th century. I guess digital trust wouldn't exist without it.

Strangely enough I'm at the complete opposite end of the author. Docker Compose imo operates exactly at the right abstraction layer and to me the author never really explains what the problems with Docker Compose actually are. Imo Dock

Optics are not dumb. Corporates are very noisy. It is difficult to extract the signal from the noise if you're not working on a project full-time (as most people are, except for you, the tech lead), and it will definitely not happen by

Very interesting and good write-up. PS. Be cautious with using subjective words like "simple". It can be really off-putting as a reader if you think something is difficult and the author claims it's simple.

I had some trouble migrating from Poetry to uv because the dependency constraints are different. With Poetry, you can use caret ^ and tilde ~ version constraints. Apparently this is outside the PEP spec so uv doesn't implement it. Unde

I don't really get this "frameworks vs. web components" discussion. They are both tools to solve different problems. Frameworks exist to render your view as function of state in a declarative way. They use web primitives to d
