I think future Web standards should take out the Gecko/Chrome/IE layout+parsing engine and make it a separate library. Standardize a minimalistic (but powerful) GL-style presentation API. Why are standards committees dictating developer wor

As a developer, it's fantastic to read your perspective on this: I am glad there are entrepreneurs out there who don't buy into the cargo-cult of startup geek burnout. If anything, I'd be wary of someone who is too into their craft - they

They seem to be oversimplifying "US Patent 7406501 System and method for instant messaging using an e-mail protocol". It's not "just" instant messaging: the actual useful bit is the "reply to email to send instant message internally" functi

It's interesting how the obscurity is a self-selection filter for quality contributors. Making quality contributions requires more effort . Having the front-page content as a "honeypot" of sorts weeds out those individuals who are primaril

Some interesting ideas, for sure. I agree with the concept of streamlining things. But I strongly oppose the requirement of real-names-only. It should be possible to use FB for authentication/etc, but still maintain anonymity within the "ma

It's unacceptable to transmit in plain-text a password that the user specified. But if it's a randomly-generated new nonce, seems OK as a pragmatic middle-ground. Folks like us, who care, will log in and change it.

Indeed. Contrast that with the "cleverness above all else" geek ego push, commonly found on discussion sites such as this. Abandoning appreciation for "programming skill" has helped me be much happier and more efficient in just getting thin

I suppose the expectation is that unless you are escaping imminent danger (refugee status) or joining a loved one (marriage), your decision to change your home is a calculated move - and the gov't gives a similarly calculated go-ahead. In o

Just to add to the over-thinking: I find myself marking things as read when I've gleaned their meaning from the subject, without instructing the app to display the entire message body. "Mark as Read" should be "Mark as Understood".

Interesting, I think they mis-characterize Steve Yegge's rant. Steve did not give Google+ a glowing opinion, but the "pathetic afterthought" part was aimed only at the API part of it, not the entire product.

The web needs a standard API for displaying content. 95% of the client-side headaches out there are due to browser DOM rendering and event model quirks and incompatibilities.

I have seen this feature "chart" pasted into HN posts before. Didn't folks slam the original iPhone the same way? Not to say that the Fire is a guaranteed hit, but I think that as a consumption device aimed at consumers it needs very little

I, for one, thought that he was going to argue against the overall hierarchical FS metaphor. Personally, I wonder what things would be like if the OS provided a key-value store (or some such NoSQL-ish API) as a core service instead.

Isn't WebOS basically like that already? From what I understand, it uses most of the same tooling as regular HTML apps, just with some OS hooks. But then I don't know much. If that's the case, then it's the closest to what you describe out

Agree re: cash grab. The counterpart "safe" TLD is part of a much bigger content curation problem that is evolving in the Internet. Some parents out there are not at all OK with Disney content, even, some will want to leave boobs in but hea

I don't think your app would be considered over-designed - check their "police scanner codes" example. Your app still uses normal buttons, and even the "tabs" are close to Apple's toggle-button-array design. Your search field is exactly lik

I am 100% agreeing with the article, with one caveat. Database engines are not just for storing - each is basically a "utility knife" of data retrieval - indexing, sorting and filtering are available via (relatively) simple SQL constructs.

The big question is what kind of problem is being solved? Truth is, nobody is giving up good old passwords just yet. Two-factor helps when necessary, but the password is still there. The actual issue, IMO, is avoiding recovery of the plaint
