I’ve always liked CSV. It’s a streaming friendly format so: - the sender can produce it incrementally - the receiver can begin processing it as soon as the first byte arrives (or, more roughly, unescaped newline) - gzip compression works wi

Respect, not fear. I chose the word intentionally. Respecting the working system means investing a little before going in to redo. That’s all. No everyone is right for such work, which is fine because they are often well suited for other eq

Maybe don’t assume other people are “wrong”? A strongly typed codebase in a larger system almost certainly has untyped boundaries (HTTP, JSON, SQL, etc.) and likely to data driven with combinatorial complexity. Going into such rewrites with

States and municipalities don’t need to build it; small community-run organizations (nonprofits or not) can do so in Oregon.

Can this be done for smaller areas by sharing a full time employee? For example, our community has a shared well and reservoir with a part time water manager that administers/maintains our system along with many others in the area.

In Oregon we have “community” telcos that have been installing high speed internet in rural areas for decades, and continue to do so[1]. The service/tech provided by these companies is far better and cheaper than the national/larg

I’ve been using HTMX on a greenfield project (not reimplementing something) and I’ve found it easy to work with and effective. Nothing magical, but simpler. Less effort, not more. After being reminded of the importance of supporting low-spe

I tend to make DELETE work without parameters, but allow them in the body (JSON) for non-essential but helpful options. And example is allowing a flag to override delete protections. I doubt this is a “best” practice but I’ve never had a pr

Like others, this story was very impactful on me (and still is). Over the years, though, my understanding of “intelligence” has evolved and I’m of the opinion today that “it” is several independent (but not unrelated) things: the abilities

Would it make sense to use a Prolly Tree’s root hash as the ETag for a collection resource in an HTTP API? Given an HTTP API that: - includes a collection resource to which items maybe added and removed - and for which supporting an ETag

Anyone else find more time for enjoying NOT paying attention to any “media” anymore? Seriously, I peek every once in a while to confirm it’s still a train wreck and then enjoy closing the window.

I don’t know that’s true. My last two very-not-meta-sized companies have both had systems that were very cost effective and essentially what the article describes. It’s not the simplest thing to put in place, but far from unapproachable. I
