There's a good summary here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada%E2%80%93United_States_r... At least one Canadian business magnate (Kevin O'Leary) has tried to position himself in on the deal and visited Tru

Generally, governments in Canada are voted out in roughly 9-year intervals. Trudeau took office in 2015, so nothing unusual there. Moreover, Trudeau is exiting with approval ratings just a percent below his predecessor, Stephen Harper (22%

This is a really great anthology of perspectives. Thanks for doing this, I think you're going to help a lot of people.

I want to say that's like a mint trying to stop counterfeiting by issuing fake bills themselves. But what am I missing here?

Makes sense. Maybe this was a "see-what-happens" experiment that caught more attention than they expected? I can't imagine it came from Instagram having a shortage of content. e: Like, the quality and relevance of the content

I don't understand why Facebook would want to debase the value of their content by mixing in obvious AI slop. It's a sharp contrast to their past strategy of keeping the network as 'authentic' (their words) as possible.

How does this fit into a North American context, where many cultures at the point of European contact (i.e. Haudenosaunee, Algonquin, Inuit) practiced communal property? It seems they stayed egalitarian long after the extinction of local me

The promise of future value from a captive audience. The idea that no competitor could succeed because everything worthwhile is already on Twitter. A self-reinforcing network effect. IMO, this sort of held up, even with Musk's hijinks.

No, L.M. Sacasas is a longtime scholar of McLuhan and Ivan Illich. He most certainly writes these articles himself.

Ah, I wish this product could have panned out. I hope it doesn't become a bugbear for future experiments with hardware user interfaces + AI. I'm still of the Bret Victor school of thought that we can do better than just tapping an

This happened in Toronto last year and knocked out the system entirely for four months. It seems that libraries are a big target for these actors. I wonder who they are, and what their agenda is?

This seems a lot like the 70s-80s auto market, a period you'd think would be burned into Detroit's institutional memory. Back then, companies like Toyota outcompeted companies like Ford by offering an affordable, reliable, no-fri

Yeah -- you're right, this has been a long time coming. I just think the closures and layoffs these past few months have finally closed the chapter on the style of journalism and tastemaking they built.
