I’m always amazed how often the “surprise” that digital technology is in fact not unbiased and robotic in nature keeps getting written about. Algorithms that optimize for click through rate for ads and search relevancy will inevitably be a

This article almost seems satirical. Given I can only speak for the hackathons I’ve been to; a couple in college and others at two of the big 5, I still feel like nothing about them is forced and people just work on whatever they feel like

This just seems true by definition. If you have a learning algorithm that has generalized well, then adding noise to its input shouldn’t result in a large degradation in accuracy.

The title of this post is misleading, they eventually supplied a software patch that fixed the clock drift. The Israelis proposed rebooting as a stopgap until the bug could be fixed.

Has there been a resolution as to who was generating the fraudulent comments on the FCC proposal? I believe they’re real I’ve just been wondering why someone/some organization would do that, unless it was some conspiracy by the ISPs, b

I work at Microsoft, and I know around promo time in addition to people on your team, managers ask for feedback from people not on your team that you’ve interacted with as well so that can be used in conjunction with whatever projects work

I disagree with this article for the most part, it doesn’t make sense to say that just because some group projects are not optimal implies all project based learning is bad. I think doing projects individually is hugely important both from

This is such a joke. The fact that he can waste our government’s money and time on bs like this is infuriating. He’s just a wealthy person who has nothing to do with his time other than yell at people to get off his lawn. I’m just glad the

I had the exact same experience. I was an inch away from not reading the end, then the stabbing happened, then the murder happened... then everyone was dead.. Insane. It escalated quickly.

Yeah this makes it seem even weirder that Disney is obsessing over the codes, it isn’t like RedBox is price gouging and making a huge profit off of their work. It isn’t even their main line of revenue.

So how does RedBox actually sell the code for such a discount and make profit? Is it because when they buy the physical copy they essentially get two copies? (One physical and one digital) and then they rent the physical one and make profit

Yeah this is exactly what I was thinking as well. I feel like there are enough successful startups that there would probably be better candidates. I know HW is hard but it seems weird they picked him when their sell-off for $40 million bare

For me, I really like the “programmable semi-colon” metaphor, where essentially a monad glues together computations and has additional context/actions carried along between the glued computations. If you’re looking for external resourc

Clearly he isn’t talking about murder, he is talking about the seven Christian virtues, and yes Trump pretty much embodies the opposite of all them. I feel like you’re conflating “taking something at face value” with ignoring context.

Yeah I want to add that at a lot of universities there isn’t much financial aid for international students. As a result only the richest families can afford to send their children here.

I don’t agree with this at all. It’s up to the participants to argue their points and see who has more valid designs. I became a much much better programmer by learning from senior devs who review my code.

At least for me the reason I’m fine with my phone is that it’s a metered connection. If it was sending that much data to the mothership you’d probably hit the ceiling on your data plan really quickly. Since my home connection doesn’t have s

There is a huge difference between these two scenarios. LOL has a very clear objective function and feedback. Code quality is a metric that is hard to make precise, even humans have trouble with it.

The one issue I have with the article is that the author doesn’t mention specifics about designing streets to lower the speed. Is the implied suggestion to make roads terribly curved so it’s really hard to drive fast? That seems to have it’
