It's a fairly vanilla mutt+fetchmail+procmail setup. Complicated compared to an all-in-one email application, but not if you're used to separating MUAs (e.g., mutt) and MDAs (e.g., procmail). (EDIT: Oh, and I agree with my sibling about IMAP -- not trying to ignore the parent.)
