I've "skipped" zsh--I tried it a few times, but it didn't seem enough better than bash for it to be worth learning, converting all my scripts, and so on. fish does seem worth the effort, and in fact many of my bash scripts and configuratio

I'm guessing the OP means: given the high stakes (environmental, financial, moral, and so on), why aren't governments more involved in this research? (They're already regulating and subsidising farming in pretty much every country of the w

We've tried using checklists a bit for code review, and hit the problem that our checklists would be pretty much guaranteed to have at least one item that was arguably inapplicable to the changeset. So you'd have some changeset that was ve

There's a nice list of checklists at http://www.projectcheck.org/checklists.html including a "checklist for checklists" (!) http://www.projectcheck.org/checklist-for-checklists.html Great article on the use of checklists in hospitals, b

Well ... I think it's actually pretty good bug reporting habit. Was it text/plain or unstyled text/html? Was the body an error message but a styled header and footer present? You might want to copy and paste the text as well, to aid future

3/31/2013 is the backup they're reverting to, not when they got hacked though, right? (The email refers to "downtime over the last week", so I guess the hack happened around 6th April or later.

These three things require wildly different levels of ability: incorrectly using a t-test (e.g. using it in the wrong circumstances), correctly using a t-test, inventing the t-test. I think Wilson is saying that whilst scientists need to be

There's an intriguing exercise in Paul Heyne's "The Economic Way of Thinking" that asks, as a thought experiment, what would happen if a helicopter simply dropped cash on groups of people that needed it--the thinking being that if people ha

So a readable stream is an EventEmitter, but it's not recommended that you actually listen for 'data' events? (Instead you're supposed to call read()?) That seems ... counterintuitive. Anyone know what you're supposed to do if you have co
