tan does not have a discontinuity at zero. |x|/x does, as does 1/x. tan's is at pi/2 in particular and (n+1/2)pi in general.

I really like MacDown except that, every so often, it freezes and shows the spinning beach ball for ten seconds to a minute, and then proceeds. I primarily use it for MathJax for math.stackexchange.com. An alternative is moeditor.

I like good old Picasa for handling my photos. It works on High Sierra and, clicking OK a few times when it starts up, on Mojave. I know there are lots of other photo handlers, but Picasa is my choice. So, no Catalina for me. Also, I use Of

Reminds me of something I read many years ago: There are two ways of doing a Ph.D. thesis: (1) Finding a problem and solving it; (2) finding a method and then finding a problem it solves. The second is much more likely to be successful.

Don't know about the idiots. My quora feed keeps coming up with pairs of "What is the square root of nnnn?" for seemingly random integer nnnn. Don't know how to stop it. When I feel like it, I answer "2".

The algorithm seems to be at least quadratic in the length. On a 2014 i7 Mac mini, (n, time(sec)) = (1000, 0.29), (2000, 1.65), (4000, 9.70), (8000, 58.42).

My refurbished 2015 Macbook Air ($500) works just fine. Updated to Mojave. Even got Picasa to run on it (have to click an error message five times, but then runs fine).

Correct. Incommensurable - lacking a common measure. The side and diagonal of an isosceles right triangle are incommensurable - there is no length that goes into both an integer number of times. There is a proof of this in Euclid.
