A lot of newsroom editors and journalists would be better off if they read this article. It explains how journalism should be, but unfortunately not how it is. There are exceptions of course - the Economist springs to mind. Unfortunately

The fact that you read HN probably means you're more capable than most freelancers out there. We, as people, tend to overestimate the abilities of others and underestimate our own, it's just the way the brain works. I once did a job where m

That's true. The difference is that the Iphone lacked features because of Steve Jobs' desire to only do something if you can do it perfectly. The Kin lacked features because of politics. This is what will kill Microsoft.

That's what I thought. If they expect it to be cracked (which they might, why put it there if you don't expect anyone to crack it) it could be something much simpler. I'd maybe start looking at some sort of substitution scheme or something

The basic problem is that if you ask 100 different project managers what they want you'll get 100 different answers. Every project manager (I'm using a very broad definition of project manager here...) wants a system that is almost but not

I don't think your explanation is correct, simply because it doesn't give an evolutionary advantage to pray for something that may or may not come true. On the contrary you spend precious resources on something superfluous.

Just because we're the only species that has this trait it doesn't mean it isn't natural. Bats are the only ones that use echo-location, but that doesn't make it more or less natural. It's simply adapting to the environment.
