I don't find this one useful. [up-arrow] automatically inserts the last command, which gives a generic mechanism to correct the command and it requires no more typing than !!: [up-arrow][control-a]sudo [enter]

I'm in a middle of creating a web application, and my plan was to serve static files from S3. Based on your post, it seems like a really bad idea. If the problems are so apparent, I wonder why this is so generally accepted and recommended a

This indeed is an issue of extreme importance. I'm afraid only Linus Torvalds is qualified to pass a judgement on the quality of this commit message. Fortunately, he isn't quick to judge: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/pull/17#issuecomm

I also don't understand how it works. If you could up-vote just by following a link, you could easily gain a system. For example, you could submit a story that automatically up-votes itself when visited by logged-in user, without any button

In 1995 Douglas Hofstadter wrote a short essay that describes his amazement with a piece of music composed by a program. Interesting reading: http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/courses/cse403/03su/m...

IMO the biggest benefit of REST vs RPC is reduced coupling between the client and the server. With RPC client needs to be explicitly aware of all methods and parameters that the server supports. With well designed REST interface this is not

My impression is that ranking algorithm, as described in the HN FAQ, is too simplistic, and as a result luck is too important factor in many HN submissions. The more advanced algorithm would be for example to identify a set of HN users that

With Persona you don't need site specific passwords and you don't expose a password to sites that you are signing to. This is a huge advantage over popular one password per site model.

This is also an example of composition: cat /etc/passwd | cut -d':' -f1 | sort | grep -v root | tee /tmp/users It was invented long before OOP and until today this is probably the most successful approach to code reuse.

You misunderstood me a bit. I gave PI as an example of constant that _can be_ delivered and it is well-understood why it has a certain value. I agree this wasn't a good example, PI is indeed mathematical constant, although it appears in phy

But maybe as we acquire knowledge we will be able to explain why constant have given values. For example: the distance from Earth to the Sun during a given day of a year could in the past be considered a magic number. But today, thanks to K

Sure, but OpenBSD could have chosen some reasonably safe number that would not be in obvious conflict with Cisco equipment and would make users life easier. Instead they decided to have a childish revenge on Cisco.
