zsh was only in I think 10.4 or 10.3, hard to tell anymore as I don't have any ppc machines to install any old os's on any longer. Just giving historical context, not trying to say anything about markeshare or anything. Apple seem

If the argument for posix sh is that its 70k, I'm not sure thats a pro or con. I compared the runtime of a perl script versus shell doing pretty much the same thing, and perl was much faster because there was significantly less fork&#x

At work I'm the ruby|python|perl guy because I almost steadfastly refuse to use bash/sh. Its less that I don't like shell, but doing complex things in it doesn't scale past a certain point. That and I'd rather use a

Even for OSX its kinda iffy as statements go. I think (been a while now) tcsh was the default for < 10.3, 10.3 was zsh and maybe 10.4, then it moved to /bin/bash as default shell.

I'm not sure where I used completeness in my argument prior? Updating a file and updating a directory to me are effectively the same thing. The fact that git checkout can accept either a filename/directoryname, or a revision strik

To be honest I don't see the issue at all here. Fundamentally the following all make sense to me intuitively: git checkout dir (lets assume cwd is in a git repo) cd dir && git checkout . And for completeness: g

I've used unix pretty much my entire computing life and outside of dealing with files and directories I've NEVER thought of . as meaning anything but the directory entry I'm in. Comparing git to hg here is bad, as pointed out

Yep, /r/science is about the only default that is ok. And if you've seen a climate change discussion there, you'll realize how painful it is to keep discussion on topic on reddit. I remember going to reddit and thinking,
