Word up to completely random low-margin stuff that doesn't come across as promotional but succeeds as promotion anyway. Few companies are as good as Panic at this (not counting rock bands).

The point's been better made elsewhere in the thread by now, but: what I mean is Google's always been a "best to market" company (to borrow a phrase from a friend) more than a "first to market" company. That certainly holds true for search

Craigslist does need to start charging for personals. $1 would be pretty appropriate - enough to make spam unprofitable, but not enough to drive legit users to a better deal (at least I'm not aware of any).
