I think the issue is that this is a completely unknown company/product. Why should users give out any personal information to request for an invite for something with next to no information.

I've seen this myself while using the Android Facebook SDK (which is quite poor). I'm still debating with myself whether the article overstates the implications of this issue though. To really make use of it you'd need to create an Android

I often wondered if this amount of effort is truly required and if it actually provides results people can relate to. I used Netflix for a while and I find the recommendations to be pretty average for me. Quite possibly it is because I don'

I'm also 28 and have left my work to form a startup. Money is not a motivation for me but I've been doing this for 8 months now and it is a big factor. If someone offered $5 million dollars to me right now and buy my company I would definit

As tempting as it sounds I don't think there is any way to release the negative results without looking evil :).

I've been using namecheap.com for a while and they are, in general, pretty good. One issue I have noticed is that their redirecting service seems to be pretty unreliable. It appears to work 2/3rd of the time. The other 1/3 it gives off all

I'd also like to add that "tricking" the YC partners into an interview is not a wise choice of words :)

I agree with this to a certain extent but it doesn't help that the Australian governments only interest is digging crap from the ground. There are no incentives for tech companies to stay in Australia and the government seems to have no int

If you want to pursue the idea then it is best you pay him and write a contract. If the business starts to succeed I have no doubts that he'll be coming back for his share.

My friend managed his hands/arms pretty badly by rock climbing. He couldn't use a mouse/keyboard for more than 5 minutes for a long time. Basically the conclusion was don't damage your hands :). It is difficult to cope and the alternative i

I had a similar experience at my first job (while I was still going to uni). The funny thing is the CEO would often take me to his office and show me how much money they were making with the work I was doing. He would brag that the last cha

I'm currently in Toronto (I'm from Melbourne, Australia). We submitted our application as well. I'd be interested in meeting up with some like-minded people!

In the FAQ it says if you wish to apply with multiple ideas use one of the other founders accounts. Maybe you should apply as 'no idea' with one founder and with your idea with another founder. Hopefully PG can clarify if this sounds reason

I would also suggest not to make it sound like a job interview. At the moment you have an idea and not much else. If you want to find a cofounder then you need to be the one showing people why they should choose to go with you not the other

At my last job we used Python to write the UI for controlling train brakes (electronically controlled pneumatic railway brakes). Worked really well for us since we did a buttload of testing (with robotframework http://code.google.com/p/rob

I once worked for a company that did a lot of military contracts. They would ask some of us to get security clearance to be able to work certain projects (and enter the 'secret room'). It was still optional and I never felt it pushed on me

This is a great "I don't want to work here" filter. If I was asked for my password during an interview I would probably leave. I can easily afford to do that because there is such a demand for software engineers (and I'm not even looking!).

I'm surprised by that response, 'lighten up' to be clear. We always joked around and if anybody, whether it be female or male, got offended then it was certainly not OK. I have never worked with anybody that intentionally tried to offend so

I moved to Toronto (from Melbourne Australia). Use to be obsessed with cars. When we moved we sold both our cars and I love not having to drive anymore. It helps that the public transport is a million times better in Toronto than back home.

I wonder if the brackets were not around the word female if it would be considered as offensive. Regardless it was a stupid thing to put on there. I don't even get why they added "female" to that sentence.

Are you guys keeping track of statistics of grades for applications? I am wondering if at some point there is a clear cut off that you can safely say we don't need to interview these groups. If it is a linear/gradual decrease I'd imagine it

I usually wake up at 8 and work until around 12. I'll go to the gym and be ready for work by about 2. Most of the time I'll work until my girlfriend comes back from work which is around 10pm. I try to do a minimum of 8 hours a day with a fe

That's good advice. One of the first things I do when I move is find a gym. I find it really helps to break the day up and go work out for a bit. When I finish and get back to work it is almost like starting another day.
