That's a sobering argument. But I wonder how it compares to other major disruptions, such as major wars. Or even the 2008 recession.

I was going from $1 per day per resident. And in retrospect, I was off re income. $100-$1000 per day is reasonable for a middle class worker, but not the average resident. So OK, make that 10 to 100 times greater.

Indeed. And what are net economic losses? I'm guessing that it's somewhere between 100 and 1000 times that. Edit: Sorry. Make that 10-100 times greater.

I don't think that we know where the pandemic started, whether it was bats for sale in the market, or escape from the lab. Maybe it was both. But I do think that sampling and lab work are important. You just need to be careful. Very, v

Wow. That'd be quite the fuck up. I mean, maybe they were sampling bat caves, to check for SARS-CoV-like viruses. Which would have been prudent. But then maybe they were sloppy, so many died, and it escaped the lab. If you could find s

Huh. Maybe Chinese labs were studying SARS-CoV-like viruses because the risk of zoonotic reemergence was so damn obvious. See my comment in another thread.[0] But in any case, doesn't ignoring that risk count as "inadvertence"

No, this was a high-volume play boat. About 35 years ago. And it wasn't a kit. I was boating with a club with a shop, and members who knew what they were doing.

Having built a glass/kevlar/epoxy kayak, it's a little mind blowing to read about people building a supersonic airplane, using similar (albeit far^N more precise) techniques.

Also, how many of those images are just sexting between consenting young people? I do recall reading about kids who have been prosecuted for sharing images of themselves. And then there are all the cam entrepreneurs.

For the most part, there's nothing surprising here. Because we know so little, and searches for evidence have been driven by preconceptions, and outright superstition. This jumps out as the key observation : > By contrast, Mina Wein

That sounds right. But it's my impression that the Taiwanese aren't much like old China. They went from Japanese occupation to ROC occupation.

I'm no expert, but it's my impression that the faction that ended up controlling Taiwan is not the "culture of old China". It's the westernized elite that was trying to reform China as a democracy.

It's a wash, I think. Anyone who cares uses VPNs and/or Tor. You can do either IPv4 or IPv6 with VPNs, but the methodology is different. With IPv4, it's just NAT. With IPv6, VPN servers must assign a public address. And with
