If mahalo were pulled from the rankings, other pages, most likely of better quality, would fill that space. There is nothing to prevent them from using adsense to monetize the quality of their (non-scraped) content.

Perhaps they want to retain the possibility of selling the app (or some souped-up version). Also, opened source probably would get in the way of something so early in its development cycle.

He didn't catch the first hacker by a long shot. He caught a hacker (and did it with a great deal of resourcefulness). Hackers had been around for quite a while when this went down.

You can also try running hardware diagnostics from the disk that came with your mac. That will do a test to see if something is currently broken.

Install SmartReporter. It will give SMART diagnostics which can indicate if (and how quickly) your disk is trending towards mechanical failure.
