I hadn't thought about it in the general case, but I do frequently find myself adding a sleep for PID mod some appropriate constant to the beginning of big distributed batch jobs in order to keep shared resources (NFS, database, etc) from g

There is an embarassing amount of whinging in this thread about paying $0.50 per day for what is probably the best newspaper in the country. I've been paying for the Times for several years now and it isn't even a blip on my budget.

I don't think you're getting his point. I can still replace GC with malloc() and we end up with the same criticisms of C that you have of Go and Java. > I'm saying that much system level work has to optimize by not using malloc(). I've

Some people are using this post as an opportunity to bash Texas, but the article says he was arrested by DHS (federal authorities) in Seirra Blanca, which is in New Mexico. This doesn't have anything to do with Texas.

Any car needs to recharge the battery after cranking. Higher compression engines require more energy to crank. The "top of the line" performance of your bimmer is inexorably linked to the time it takes to recharge the battery. As a BMW ow

Fair enough but afaik WebKit frowns upon STL usage (exceptions too), and it's still going quite strong.

This is a false dichotomy. There is much more opportunity out there than working for MegaCorp or overhyped low-paying RoR startups, especially if you have the chops.

Surely you must see the irony of typing up your zing about C++ being relevant only to the "mil-aero" crowd into a web browser that is almost certainly written entirely in C++.

If they were tech support, which is what it sounds like from the post, then they would be at the bottom of the org chart, not in the middle. Not that that excuses your stupid sandwich analogy, which is fucking stupid.

As long as you're worrying about the double copy, you may as well worry about chasing the pointers in your map through the cache hierarchy. Usually I'd use unordered_map here unless there was a good reason not to.

A more idiomatic way to phrase the awk in the Selection example: awk -F ":" '{ if ( $3 != $4 ) print }' /etc/passwd would be like this: awk -F ":" '$3 != $4 { print }' /etc/passwd The first is obviously valid awk, but the

With respect to the OP's specific problem, namely serving up compressed static assets, why use Node.js at all? They're static files. Host 'em on a CDN or let lighttpd take care of it. There's no need to add the complexity of Node to a re

I don't think it's fair to lump Wolfram Alpha in with Cuil and Color. I use Wolfram Alpha at least once a week. It's great for sharing plots of arbitrary equations and running through back of the envelope calculations.
