Maybe I have missed it, but have we heard why the NSA had contractors in Hawaii? What can you do from Hawaii that you couldn't do from somewhere else?

The whole of iTunes Connect could use a refresh. Sales reports from the previous day are often delayed by several hours, and there isn't any good way to hook optimization tools into your app's App Store page.

You are conflating market making and latency arb, which are not the same thing. All of your points apply to latency arbitrage and you haven't said anything about market making. As long as there are profitable arbitrage opportunities, people

My point was that if you are developing a program to do electronic market making (adding liquidity), then the program you write to test that program must by definition be taking liquidity (it shoots test orders at the quotes provided by you

We use technology to improve efficiencies in every industry in the world, but when we use technology in the capital markets people freak out. I don't get it.

Some tweaks to your explanation: The thinking behind this theory was that a simulator would keep adding liquidity to a fake market for testing a market making algo. If you're testing a market making algo (i.e. to participate in NYSE's RLP

I was much more cynical about new technology products before I tried to build and market one myself. That shit is hard, and most of the peanut gallery here one HN has no idea what it takes.

This seems like a good idea. There are a lot of wealthy traders in NYC, but the richest guy in the city is the one selling all the traders neatly packaged financial information.

I agree with #1, but I don't think the also/too redundancy is ungrammatical. It's superfluous but syntactically valid.

You must have missed the part where the NASDAQ bug caused about $60MM in losses whereas the subsequent price decline has destroyed $40B in market capitalization. You can lose your shirt in the stock market, but that's been true since long b

The exchange matches buy orders against sell orders. In this case they were matching buy orders against sell orders that had already been cancelled (which is not something that should ever happen). NASDAQ stepped in and took the other side

I have heard of the Ballmer Peak, but for me even a single pint of beer totally kills my ability to write code. My creative peak seems to be the first few hours after a really good night's sleep.

I think a lot of people get bit by small stdio buffers and switch to mmap, not realizing that read() based solutions can be improved greatly by better buffering strategies.

The thing is, it's pretty hard for an ordinary person to buy a share of a company. You usually need to be able to buy a large quantity of shares, pay for a trading account, try not to get ripped off with various fees, and deal with taxes.
