I was aware of this, but I don't think a 32 sample 4-bit wave RAM is quite good enough to make something representative :)

I remember when they gave enough information about their vault formats that I could write my own linux app to fetch data out of their .opvault format in roughly an afternoon!

I have a similar history. The biggest loss for me on v7 -> v8 is 1Password Mini - that's a wonderful little 'browser extension for the desktop', and quick access is just awful to use in comparison. It's not helped by

Windows 2000 wasn't a consumer version of Windows, so gets left out. edit: pity, because I think all-in-all it's one of the best versions of Windows I ever used. Very fast, no junk to get in the way, tremendously clear UI, very co

I used to do this on Windows and found a ton of apps either broke their layout or got blurry when moved between monitors, so I wouldn't class Windows as 'ideal' here either :/

For extra fun: in the UK, "format shifting" - eg ripping CDs etc - is not legal. This means you can't rip an audio CD, DVD, or bluray, even if you don't have to bypass DRM to do it. I'd expect this translates to e

Exactly. Tipping for regular meals & service is not a part of UK culture. I only do it when somewhere does something truly exceptional or for a really large dining party.

I couldn't agree more, with the addition of dosbox and PCem/86box. There's a ton of titles from the late 90s onwards to ~2010 that don't work correctly on modern Windows - either very unreliable, have something fundament

Wine (and Proton by extension) is a marvel. Runs most of my windows software with little to no issue, and is more compatible with older games than Windows 10/11 itself!

I do have a shell VM (accessed via SSH & xpra) that I update much less frequently and still don't have issues. I think the main reason I have fewer issues compared to other comments here is I try to minimise my use of the AUR, and

AUR packages are not part of the distribution though, so that's understandable - they're explicitly user contributed packages and are very much "here there be dragons" and "if it breaks, you get to keep both pieces&

I'm genuinely curious about this, as I see people say it a lot but it's not my experience at all. I have an Arch Linux desktop (KDE + AMD), I update it every few days, and it's always fine. I also have a shell VM that runs IR

I really recommend sitting down and listening to this - it's a very good cover of 3DFX from start to finish (and I feel like it was probably one of the primary sources for this article).

I'm not surprised there were unexpected issues - I've found running laptops 24x7 (or other SFF devices) tends to get weird heat issues. I had fun with 8th gen Intel NUCs just turning themselves off after a while, turned out to be

I do this even on AM4 - I have a 5800X but I run it in ECO mode which locks it to 65W PTT. Drops on average less than 10% multi core performance and no single core performance at all. Much quieter, cheaper, etc. I also have a 35W 5750GE (8c

I find that Microsoft Authorised Refurbishers are a good place to start to find cheap old corporate machines - eg I can typically get something like an Intel i5 8500T based Lenovo/Dell/HP mini PC with RAM and SSD for less than £20

This is a step in the right direction - providing contentful and relevant update emails instead of pure marketing fluff. The initial intro emails feel a bit unnecessary for me though - sending docs links etc that way just feels redundant, a
