If you're so stressed about it, why don't you turn off auto-upload? Why don't you use something other than Google Photos? If you have a genuine requirement for photo sharing -- to share your shild's photos with their doc

Yes, I was wondering what the hell they did to my "back" button. Then I saw that I had "visited" the page something like 8 or 10 times just by clicking the article link here. How the hell does that work? And why?

I do think there's a degree of selection bias, here. Only quality writing from long ago would survive; the C19 equivalent of tweets (or HN comments) will have long since vanished, so not be around for us to evaluate.

"council taxes / water and sewage" The immediate question that comes to mind: Can you opt out of those to do your own thing? If not, then imho they're taxes.

IANAL either, but I believe that, yes, you could do just that. Of course you'd not have any copyright... :) TBH I'm not entirely clear why the issue is so important to the people who publish these things, but clearly it is !

No, they're forced into long form posts because recipes cannot be copyrighted . By adding a story you get something with copy rights.

Interesting work in this space is being done by OpenPrivacy with their "cwtch" app. An express design goal is to minimise side-channel leakage of information.

Doesn't matter, because, "These updates will go into effect after the 30-day notice and comment period". i.e. "Comment all you like, we're steaming ahead with this stupid idea regardless."

Why do all the jobs on the first page start with "javascript"? Is the site suffering from a Scunthorpe problem? Because right now it's pretty useless.

I think that (one of the) point(s) of the article is that it's not "the masses" that want all this noise, but the attention-craving product managers in appliance companies that want it. (And an Apple or Windows computer is

The Microwave Conundrum baffles me. I have in my head a picture/video of how it must have gone... Monday-morning Team Standup at Microwave Corp. Debate has been raging for 20 minutes on what to do when the timer runs to zero on the new

Yes. Exactly. Telling people what they've done wrong enables them to behave better in future. Isn't that what we want... rehabilitation?

It's worse than that. You omitted * User has no idea what they did wrong, and nor does anybody else. And the trouble with that is, nobody can learn what the offensive behaviour was. (Perhaps that's intentional?)

Yes, of course you're right, and I was in error thinking only of the people who use steroids for non-medical purposes, and forgetting that there are many legitimate applications. My bad, and I apologise for that oversight.

Yep! The only people I've ever known who were (literally) "on steroids" were uniformly and without exception psychopathic jerks. It's a stupid epithet, frequently used to describe the exact opposite of the sentiment it

This matched my guess: it's about MS extracting a $x per machine tax on all non-MS OSs to stay on their certificate list. Same playbook they've used on Android.

Personally I really, really like Sourcehut's UI/UX -- far easier to navigate for a casual user than those other Big Name alternatives. As well, I like the minimalism of the UI.
