It's a mixture of both: Military competition is what drives a ton of research with an immense budget behind it. The problem I have with some nations (the US is not the only offender here) is that they deploy the poisoned fruit of that

That is the worst that can come out of this case - and it would be a critical hit for Uber. Self-driving will be a big aspect of the future (how long that future's away is a different discussion), but once self-driving cars are here,

I cannot speak for the entire video, I only looked up the elephant story, but that seems to be told inaccurately. I might agree with the general sentiment (Edison is a jerk), but wouldn't quote any of the anecdotes told as fact.

Yes, I can see that happening. But the article does not state the precondition of war to shoot down the satellite - it asks to do it now, possibly starting the war.

I agree that hardening infrastructure against attacks (not just EMPs) is important. But that is only one of two requests made in the article. The other one is about shooting down a satellite owned & operated by another nation, an unprec

The Minute Physics video made me worry more about Russia's & US' ability to cause a nuclear winter rather than worry about NK. Yes, there's additional risk if another country has them, but that argument is independent fro

I don't understand how that addresses the NK's advantage point. Also, if risk is an actual issue, how do 10 nukes in NK justify this extend of worry, in contrast to the weapons Russia and the US have? (For some reason I'm rem

I should have been more specific (will edit in a sec), the question was aimed at the benefit for the decision makers. NK leadership is going down if they launch a nuclear strike, independent of how the counterstrike is done (so their show o

I fully agree that newer designs are safer, but ignoring the human factor in the equation is IMO not very reasonable. Without the human factor, driving a car is very safe. That argument is valid, but it doesn't reflect reality.
