A lot of users are lost in the functionality of modern desktop operating systems. For Apple, this means a worse experience and lost content sales. For Google, this means lost advertising dollars. It makes sense that both companies would eve

True, but 2D Boy should also be the exception when it comes to these "charitable" payments. They're a small indie game shop that produces top value content. How many of those >$1 payments would've disappeared if this was EA?

What changes to copyright law would decrease piracy, yet still incentive content creation? I'm genuinely interested if anyone here has any ideas; it seems like a very difficult problem.

If I read everything that came up on HN because it could possibly be useful, I won't have much time to start that business. For worse or better, we all have certain filters that every once and a while have a false positive. I was just elabo

But the context never matters as much as most people think. I know a few people who have completed 1-3 of your list. None of them made the business into anything approaching VoodooPC. Why? Did this particular 17 year old just get lucky? If

Every link from mixergy.com seems to follow that same format, too. "How [Someone Just Like You] Made [Large Sum of Money]". Why make your site sound like a late night infomercial? Maybe there is decent information about starting a successfu

The latest numbers I could find place Google's search market share in China at 19.8%[0]. Sadly, I think 19.8% of China's internet users is much, much larger than the number of people who decide search providers based on the ethical record o

Does it, really? Most of the optimizations mentioned in the article (compression/obfuscation, module system, yslow integration) or in these comments (debugging, refactoring, auto completion) are all available/possible in javascript alone. W

Just because I have control, doesn't mean the data is safer. It's the practical realization that Google is likely to have a more recent, redundant backup of my data than me. The amount of effort to ensure that P(losing my backup) < P(go

The Android system of notifying the user exactly which APIs are being used by an app, prior to install, seems like a step in the right direction. The talk mentions that class unmarshalling, encrypted payloads, and other tricks that make t

Ironic that a talk that mentions distortions in the press around security issues, would be linked to by such a horribly written hit piece. It would be nice if a mod could replace the original link with the pdf above. The talk finishes with

While I think the constant pressure to reform is generally a positive force, to hear that AP placement in math and sciences is triple what it was a decade ago is a nice reminder of progress.

The article is a little light on technical facts. The previous Bittorrent protocol used TCPs congestion control. Any reason to believe that their UDP+µTP replacement will outperform it? Edit: found the draft RFC: http://www.bittorrent.org/
